The 3 watt led mini maglite is one of the more powerful small flashlights I've used that run off 3AA. I've used a number of the high power flashlights that use those expensive lithium batteries and while they are brighter than flashlights that use standrd batteries, they usually only last between an hour or two. Just not worth the price in my opinion.
Best higher end flashlight I have would be a Coast tactical flashlight(model # 7736TS). Cost me $50 at Cabelas but it's 65 lumens(equivelent to a Surefire) and best of all it uses AA batteries. Lasts 100 hrs at pek brightness on new set of batteries.
When buying any flashlight, just make sure it has a lumen rating on it. Anything over 30 lumens will do the job for just about anyone. 60 lumens is great for distant lighting.

I don't know what the make is, but the wife got me a led headlamd for my birthday last year. I don't see me going back to a hand held light anytime in the foreseeable future. I highly recommend them to anyone. Between that and the Camelbak back pack she got me for Christmas, I may actually have a free hand going into the woods.

I carry a bunch of them with me. There nothing worse than tring to track something and your light gives out. I got one of those clip-on cap lights (clips on the bill of your hat ). Those are sweet !!!!! But I carry an aray of lights and I also got a port on my quad to plug in a spot-light. But my favorite one is a 21 led, 3 aaa batteries and as big as the one pictured. Bought it at the flea market for 10 bucks. Now this is an awesome little light for the money !!!!!!!!! ;D

I'm like you longhair, I carry a bunch of flashlights with me, also wear the 3 led headlamp on my hat, easier to climb the stand that way, had one of those green light ones, and during archery season I shot at a buck and didn't have another flashlight at the time but the green light one, couldn't pick up no blood with those, had to run home which wasn't far, and get regular flashlight, what a difference in finding a blood trail, so now, I make sure I carry a few with me at all times.
