I have a question about doing an euro mount. I've done them in the past and I'm not a big fan of boiling it because it always discolors the horns. I buried one last year and it turned out real nice. This year I buried one again, but it wasn't ready by the time the freeze got here. My question is, if I can find someone who has the beetles, would I still be able to take it to them? The main problem is I don't know of anyone around here who has the beetles. Any tips would be great...

I had that issue on a "practice" skull and now I use mechanics wire to hold the horns above the water. You have to use needle nose pliers and a knife tip to get around the bases real good, but the rest boils off nicely. Its a pita though so if you can get it into some bugs, I'd surely go that route.

Buckhunter, I use a kit sold at cabelas. I forget what the ingredient is to put in the water. Just to add, if you wanted the bear measured at all, you can't boil it due to shrinking it.
Tbass, when I did mine in water I used an old large oval baking pan, like what you'd use to put a turkey in. The head sits perfectly in the pan and I didn't let the horns submerge at all but the steam is what discolored them. I tried it again this year on a buck which was found dead but this time I just simmered it and they discolored also. I'm not sure if there is anything I could wrap around the horns or not.

I used a kit from Cabelas and wrapped the antlers in aluminum foil to protect them from the steam

i have beetles but i would not take the chance of infecting my colony with a skull thats bee outside. i suggest you just soak it in water at room temp until all the meat falls off johnny z

well I went ahead and boiled the rest off. For some reason this one split the bones down the center. I already bleached him and it turned out decent-not great. I was wondering if I could glue the bones back together. Has anyone tried this with any success in the past? What kind of glue should I use? I was thinking of using yellow wood glue...I'll post pics up soon.
