District Fishing Report: 6.18.2010Friday, June 18, 2010
By Deborah Weisberg
Note: Fish consumption advisories on Pymatuning and Tamarack lakes were lifted Thursday. The fish kills were caused by naturally occurring bacteria in rapidly warming waters.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lake Erie: When conditions allowed, anglers were catching walleyes in 25-30 feet and in 50-55 feet, from Walnut Creek to Virginia's Beach. Perch were hitting in 50-55 feet. Limits and sizes varied on both species, although the bigger walleyes tended to be in the deeper water.
Allegheny Reservoir, Allegheny River (Warren County): Walleyes were heating up in Sugar and Willow bays with legal-size fish coming on jigs and crankbaits in 10-15 feet and shallower. Smallmouth bass were hitting around submerged trees and rock piles. Kevin and Paul Hind of Jamestown, N.Y., won the two-day Disabled American Veterans Chapter 75 tournament last weekend with 10 fish totaling 163???4 pounds. Kevin caught the 6-pound 4-ounce tournament lunker. A total of 279 fish weighing 3683???4 pounds, and 28 limits were reported.
Allegheny River (Warren County): Walleyes and numbers of trout were hitting. An 11-pound 4-ounce, 31-inch walleye was caught May 30
Pymatuning Lake (Crawford County): Anglers drifting crawlers on jigheads or trolling Hot-n-Tots or crankbaits caught walleyes up to 28 inches and a few limits in 7-18 feet in recent days. Post-spawn crappies were biting in 12-14 feet around brush piles and man-made structures. Bluegills were on beds in the shallows, but the muskie bite slowed considerably.
Conneaut Lake (Crawford County): Some bluegills and crappies were reported, but bass fishing was quiet. Bryan Stuyvesant of Conneaut Lake caught a couple of small smallmouth bass and two northern pike Sunday.
French Creek (Crawford County): Float-fishing anglers caught a few bass and walleyes on small crankbaits in high, dirty flow last weekend. In earlier, better conditions, muskies, bowfins and a few suckers were reported.
Tamarack Lake (Crawford County): Fishing pressure remained low under the now-lifted consumption advisory, but a few anglers reported largemouth bass up to 22 inches around lily pads and spatterdock on the Meadville end of the lake.
Sugar Lake (Crawford County): Shore anglers were catching nice numbers of bluegills, crappies and yellow perch.
Canadohta Lake (Crawford County): Above-average walleyes were reported by anglers targeting the outside weed lines with leeches on floating jigheads with walking sinkers or crawler harnesses. Walleyes were 15-20 inches, although a 33-inch, 15??-pound walleye was reported. Bluegills were still on their spawning beds.
Little Sugar Creek (Crawford County): Anglers were catching trout on fathead minnows, meal worms and nitro worms.
Allegheny River (Venango County): High, dirty water last weekend made for spotty smallmouth bass and walleye catches. Two anglers fishing crankbaits and spinnerbaits released bass up to 19 inches and walleyes up to 5 pounds.
Oil Creek (Venango County): Improving conditions and cahill and caddis hatches were reported. Fish also were hitting nymphs and streamers. Smallmouth bass were becoming active.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Largemouth bass were hitting around weed beds. Walleyes were coming deeper for anglers drifting crawler harnesses and floating jigheads. Perch and catfish also were reported.
Allegheny River: Walleyes, bass, saugers and longnose gar were reported. The Venture Outdoors Downtown TriAnglers' releases off the North Shore Wednesday included a 20-inch freshwater drum by Marty Sanders of Overbrook, a 20-inch channel catfish by Tommy Lippert of Spring Garden, a 9-inch rock bass by Russ Lang of Baldwin, a 24-inch carp by Mike Kirschenbaum of Squirrel Hill and a 12-inch smallmouth bass by Eddie Ocha-Anderson of Point Breeze.
Monongahela River: Numbers of smallmouth bass were hitting. Most sizes were small, except for a largemouth in excess of 4 pounds Saturday. Jon Dennison of Finleyville is leading the Shad Lure Bait and Tackle big bass contest with a 6-pound largemouth from a Finleyville farm pond.
Ohio River: J.P. Allison of Georgetown, Pa., won the third meeting of the Chester-Newell Catfish Tournament June 12 with a 343???4 inch cat. The next contest is June 26 from Wheeling to Pittsburgh. Call 304-387-3982 for details.
High Point Lake (Somerset County): Average size bass, northern pike and pickerel were reported.
Cranberry Glade Lake (Somerset County): One angler caught small northern pike and bass
Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): A group of anglers caught 11 bass 13-18 inches, nine crappies 10-13 inches and six nice bluegills in about 15 feet, Monday.
Allegheny River (Armstrong County): High, muddy water spurred the flathead catfish bite.
Cowanshannock Creek, Buffalo Creek (Armstrong County) --Anglers were catching brown trout on Cowanshannock, and rainbows on Buffalo.
Keystone Lake, Yellow Creek Lake (Indiana County): Muskies were hitting in recent weeks. Bass season began slowly last week, although a 24-inch largemouth was reported in Keystone.
Beaver Dam Reservoir (Cambria County): Nice smallmouth bass were hitting last weekend.
Wilmore Dam (Cambria County): Nice-size blue gills and bass were reported.
Glendale Lake (Cambria County): Chris Reiger of Patton caught a 27-inch walleye of nearly 7 pounds Sunday morning. Anglers also were catching crappies and bass.
Raystown Lake (Huntingdon County): Tim Grace of Striper Guide Service reported striped bass 8-25 pounds in 12-20 feet trolling bait, spoons or lures. Lake trout were very deep and not hitting.
