Take a kid hunting and you won't have to hunt for him or her!!!

I'm going to say the German shorthair...I had and trained them for 20 years...they could do it all.....the real cold weather was the only fall back....but you can't beat them...Thunderbolt125

Mountain curs ought to rank up there pretty good. It depends on what game you want to key on. GSP's are way above on the bird hunting but some people have used curs to retrieve and flush. Probably got to go with the GSP also.

Some of those curs are so versatile its insane. There are some down south who use same dog/dogs to track wounded game, hunt squirrel, coon, bear, boar and guard the house & play with the kids!
I think field trial type deals are dominated by "specialist" type breeds, that while the best at what they do, might not be the most all around versatile.
Not sure what would take to be a good shed dog, seems to be a fairly new pasttime.

I haven't been on here in a long time and was looking at some of the threads. I still think on the average the GSP is probably the most versitile breed but mountain curs can be very versitile. I found these pictures on Squirrel Dog Central. This is not the standard mountain cur it is one of the exceptional ones in my book. I have to say that they are very versitile but most folks just use them for tree dogs. These dogs have a strong desire to please and will likely do bout anything you want. They are generally very intelligent and very trainable. Here are the pics of this outstanding individual dog. Amos the bloodtracker Amos the retriever Amos the pointer Amos the treedog
