Heat slowing fishing at Western Pennsylvania bodies of water

» The heat has slowed the fishing pressure at Lake Wilhelm, as at most places, but those venturing out have been getting fish, according to a spokesman at Fergie's Bait Shop in Sandy Lake. Anglers fishing in 10 to 12 feet of water have been getting bluegills and crappies up to 12 inches, while those using Hot 'N Tots and worm harnesses in 6 to 8 feet of water have been getting walleyes up to 21 inches. Bass up to 18 inches have been hitting rubber worms and spinnerbaits.
» Fishing pressure on the Yough River has been very slow, too, with just a handful of anglers going out, said Scott Gates of S&S Bait and Tackle in Chalk Hill. There has been no word on any catches.
» At Lake Arthur, nice catches of bluegill and sunfish were reported this weekend, according to a Fish and Boat Commission report. Channel cats and hybrid stripes have been providing action, too, while some walleyes have been taken by fishermen bouncing a jig and crawler near the bottom.
» Lake Oneida has been producing lots of largemouth bass, with one angler, Tony Smith Sr., landing a 5-pound fish.
» Water temperatures in the Ohio River have been hovering above 80 degrees, so even the catfish bite has turned off, said Wayne Lykens of Island Firearms of Neville Island.
» A few flathead catfish have been hitting suckers, bluegills and chubs in the Allegheny River, but the fishing overall has been slow, said a spokesman at Lock 3 Bait and Tackle in Cheswick.
» Anglers are reporting some catches of nice bluegills at Kahle Lake, with most of the fish being caught on small jigs tipped with maggots and wax worms. The bass anglers continue to do well on bass in the early mornings and late evenings with top water baits and weedless lures.
» At Pymatuning Lake, the walleye fishing has slowed but remains good. Channel cats are providing the most consistent action, however.
» Fishermen using nightcrawlers have been getting some largemouth bass at Acme Dam, said John Dressler of Red's Bait Shop in Acme. Those using red worms also have been getting some crappies, he said.
» A few fishermen have been targeting Laurel Hill Lake, but there's been no word on catches.
» Anglers launching from Lake Erie's North East Marina have been getting walleyes in 51 to 55 feet of water at the New York-Pennsylvania line. One fishermen, Ron Milavec from Pittsburgh, caught an 8-pound, 12-ounce walleye. Perch have been found in 56 feet of water off the Greenfield, Freeport and Mountains.
» Bass and panfish are hitting well in Presque Isle Bay in the early morning and late afternoon hours.
» Largemouth bass have been hitting on nightcrawlers and minnows for those fishing Lower Hereford Manor Lake in the evenings, said a spokesman at Will's Bait Shop in Zelienople. A few crappies also are being caught.
» At Bessemer Lake, abundant if small largemouth bass are keeping anglers busy.
» At Shenango Reservoir, fish are congregating in the main river channel. Catfish are providing most of the action, though.
» One angler fishing the South Fork of Ten Mile Creek recently caught a 40-inch class musky on a Mepps spinner, said John Ozohonish of Ozie's Sports Shop in Rices Landing.
» The bass fishing on the Monongahela River, which had been the best in recent years according to some reports, has slowed considerably with the onset of the warm weather.

Lake Erie: When conditions allowed, anglers were catching walleyes in various depths around the lake, from 30 to 53 feet and from 65 to 75 feet. Ron Milavec of Pittsburgh caught an 8-pound, 12-ounce walleye in recent weeks. The perch bite picked up, with catches coming in 53 to 58 feet out of Walnut Creek and the point of the peninsula.
Allegheny River, Allegheny Reservoir (Warren County): Jeff Baker of Warren released two walleyes up to 22 inches in the tailrace of the river while fly fishing for trout at night. In the reservoir, walleyes were deep, at least 25 feet, and smallmouths were running small to average.
Kahle Lake (Clarion County): Boat-launching remains difficult because of low water levels during dam repair work, but anglers were catching largemouth bass up to 15 inches on topwater frogs, and weightless stick worms around weed beds. Bluegills were hitting on jigs tipped with maggots or waxworms.
Allegheny River (Venango County): Local anglers caught smallmouth bass up to 18 inches mostly on crankbaits and soft plastic stickbaits in last Saturday's low, stained water.
French Creek (Venango County): A white fly hatch was reported in the lower reaches in recent days.
Woodcock Creek Lake (Crawford County): Smallmouth bass were hitting on crankbaits. A 40-inch muskie was released on a perch-colored bait last week.
Canadohta Lake (Crawford County): There was an unconfirmed report of an angler catching a 54??-inch muskie in recent weeks.
Conneaut Lake (Crawford County): Steve Hughes and Lou Wilson won last Friday's Sixth Annual United Way Bass Classic with 8 bass totaling 20-plus pounds. Their biggest bass, almost 5 pounds, was the tournament lunker. Most bass were caught on jigs pitched into weeds and on drop-shot rigs fished along the deep weedline in about 15 feet of water.
Pymatuning Lake (Crawford County): Largemouth bass up to 16 inches were reported, many in 2 to 3 feet of water. A 5-pounder was released. Walleye fishing slowed in warm water temperatures, but nice numbers of catfish were reported. Two 40-inch muskies were released.
Shenango Reservoir (Mercer County): Water in the 80-plus degree range sent fish into the deeper river channel. Catfish remained active in recent days.
Bessemer Lake (Lawrence County): Largemouth bass were reported, but sizes were running small.
Lake Oneida (Butler County): Largemouth bass up to 5 pounds were reported in recent days.
Lake Arthur (Butler County): Good panfishing was reported, along with evening action on channel catfish and hybrid striped bass. A few walleyes were hitting jigs and crawlers.
Allegheny/Monongahela/Ohio rivers: The best reports in recent days were from the Monongahela, where anglers were releasing smallmouth bass and channel catfish. The Mon also was yielding large bluegills around Charleroi and Elizabeth. The Allegheny and Ohio were fishing slower, with a few small channel catfish reported on the Allegheny this week.
Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County): John Spittal of Ursina and friends boated about a dozen bluegills, 8 and 9 inches, four smallmouth bass, 13 to 15 inches, and two rock bass last Monday. They report water levels were dropping.
