I have started a project of refinnishing a 1975 model 94 that was given to me in poor condition. I have the gun disassembled to where I am almost ready to start reblueing but can't get the rear sight off the barrel. Anyone able to tell me how to get it off.

I believe thats probably a dove tailed sight? If it is, you'll need to use a piece of hard wood or a brass rod of some type, something hard, yet softer than the steel so you dont gouge & ruin the piece. Put it against the side of the sight, and tap it off with a hammer.

I knew the front was dovetailed but I can't see the dove tail cut on the rear. I didn't want to try to tap it out only to find out that it wasn't dovetailed

If you give'er a few whacks the worst that will happen is that it still wont come off. You arent gonna screw it up as long as you use an appropriate driver and dont use a sledge hammer. ;D But i just quickly did a search on the topic, and came up with this link with a conversation about it. www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=494779

Thanks. I am a carpenter by trade so I have a handle on the stock and fore grip. That rear sight was all I wasn't sure of. The link helped to confirm my suspicions.

I finally got the rear sight off. Guru you were right about the dovetail. I used a section of an old brass shotgun cleaning rod as a punch and it came right off. Guess I better save if for future use.

Yep brass wont scratch the metal cause its softer than the barrel I was told.
