Any body shoot this way does it help you at longer distances say 75-80 yds.

The pumpkin on a post is a very effective hold on bright clear days. Just be sure to see your post clear and pumpkin fuzzy.
I use the center hold when sighting in and working loads because that is the hold I use when hunting game. Point of aim is point of impact is my goal on game.
When punching paper I will set up so that 6 = center because for targets it is the easy hold.
If the light is shifting like on a day when clouds are passing I set up with the 6 hold and when the sun is covered I hold sub 6 to be sure not to place a shot high by covering too much of the black with the post.
Yes cover your 6 had another meaning before Vietnam.

Depends on your rifle. See where it shoots at 25 and then adjust for 50 and beyond.
Just keep it in mind when you shoot at a live target.

Its a TC. Hawken 50 Cal. At 25 should the shot be above the bullseye and then start the compensating from there.

I would say it hits high or over the bull at 25 yards. But it could hit right at 6, you have to find out. If it hits the middle with a center hold it will hit at 6 because that is where you are holding it.
When I said depends on your gun I was talking about your gun not the type of gun. All guns of the same type are similar yet different.
It should also be high at 50. The load you use will also affect the impact point.
Once you find out how high or where it is at each KD than you adjust the sights to make POI the middle of the middle for the distance you expect to shoot.
Your POA will always be 6 if you want to use the 6 O'Clock hold.
When hunting you will have to make the calculated adjustments because you no longer have a KD nor will you have a pumpkin to put on the post.

I use a 6 o'clock hold on a 6 " bullseye but I want my projectile to hit at the top of the front sight at 50 yd. I don't like to obscure my target area with the front sight bead. A dead on shot up to 50. I restrict myself to 50 ish ranges anyway so I have a reasonable chance of a good hit and clean kill with my Hawken Flinter.

POA-point of impact. What is KD newguy. Thanks for the help on this matter also everyone. Those sights cover a lot of that target at 50 thats when I learned about the 6 oclock hold.

KD is known distance.
POA / point of aim
POI/ point of impact.
With the 6 O clock hold your POA is below where you want the POI. It is great for shooting paper at KD once you know adjust your sights for impact in the bull.
It is good on paper because it don't block out any of your bull and is easier to hold on the bottom of the bull than to judge the middle each shot.
With POA/POI the impact is where you are aiming and is better for live game.

Correction.
With the 6 O clock hold your POA is below where you want the POI. It is great for shooting paper at KD once you have adjusted your sights for impact in the bull.

I assume you are useing the sweet load for your gun. So I have to ask.
How big is your bull and why would you want it to shoot over your bull?

The bull is 5". From what I was reading shoot 1" high at 50 yds and for further shots like 80-90 yds go 1/3 up deers body and your on the vitals at this yardage. Your not obscuring your sight picture when you do this with the 6 O'Clock hold.
