Certainly not a new rifle, but I recently picked one up for $480 at Boyer's in Slatington. The Model Six was made from 1981-88 and was the replacement for the 760 series and was the forerunner of the later 7600's. The most significant changes were the 4 lug bolt, wider scope base hole spacing and a hardened steel insert in the bolt raceway to prevent peening by the locking lug.
My Model Six is in the most common caliber, 30-06, 6mm rem is the rarest. She is , or was, in literally NIB condition with nice low Redfield JR mounts and a very nice Jap Tasco 2x7 wide view scope. She also has a 30-06 case head inset in the barrel extension just ahead of the magazine well. The stocks are nice walnut , with alittle figure on the forend and with a high gloss finish. The buttstock is a Monte Carlo type with a decent cheeckpiece. The checkering on wrist and forend is bordered and very nicely done. The forend is an interesting design and gives a very secure grip.Of course there are the typical Remington black caps and white spacers.
The hammer forged 22 inch barrel slugs a very nice , smooth, .300 bore .308 groove and the chamber is also very nicely done. She's a rare girl in that she does not copper foul! Even Core Lokts, terrible foulers in my experience, leave only a touch on the lands. Despite a very typical 760 type trigger...She is SUPERBLY accurate! My usual standard for accuracy in a big game rifle is 3 rounds at 100 yards must not exceed 2 inches. This girl SMOKES that standard by a long shot. Of the 160 rounds I've put through her, her smallest group , so far, is 1/2 inch. her worst 2 9/16's. 40% of her 3 rounders are an inch or less. Of the remaining 60% 50% are 1- 1 1/2 and the remaining 10% are greater than 1 1/2. As a former bolt snob I can tell you these results are an eye opener. She feeds fires and ejects with 100% reliability and easily eats neck sized cases, contrary to what most folks say. the rifle points and cycles better than any rifle I've ever owned. Nothing about it requires a moment of conscious thought. Heck, recoil does 50% of the cycling for you!
My Model Six was made in Dec 1980 ( XA barrel code) and for some reason sat unused for 31 years. The only made 36243 of them and although they're not a collector's item yet, they are a rarer variant espicially as a transition model. The quality of manufacture, fit and finish of this rifle are outstanding. I would think the 7600's enjoy the same level of performance as my Six. When prowling the used racks, if you spot a 760ish rifle with a different shaped forend, check the right side of the reciever and if its marked Model Six, GRAB IT. By the way, 760 and 7600 magazines work just fine in mine...
