Winter is a time to experiment with making your own catfish doughball baits. Take cornmeal and flour and flavor it with licorice and sugar, or bran, oatmeal and flour moistened with honey. Knead strong-smelling cheese into pieces of a sponge. Mark your baits, put them aside and then keep track of what works next summer.
lets hear you favorite home made recipes. one of my favorites is a cornmeal doughball with vinilla and maple surup, but for a quick bank side bait that doesnt need cooked i use bran flakes and cherokee red.

Back when we used to do a fair amount of carp fishin' we the standard mix of cornmeal and flour you spoke of, and used different batches with different flavorings. Anise, others with vanilla, some with strawberry jello mix, orange, and one we used to do really well on mixed with molasses.
Also did well On wheat germ, dad used to make it, but cant remember the details off hand.
We usually made our baits the day before a fishin' trip, but never tried to store it for longer.

alot of the standard dough type baits can be frozen and will keep well in the freezer. as for the wheat grem my friend swore by it. he would mix it with penutbutter.
heres a great one for cats. i save my dead minnows from walleye fishing and throw them in the food prosesor(when the wife isnt home) with cornmeal and a little anise extract. shad work best but they can be hard to catch without using a casting net. we have made a special net to catch shad. its a very long handled net with porch screen for the netting.

My favorite is Velveeta Cheese, Flour, Vanilla Extract, and Canadian Mist whiskey. The vanilla sucks them in and the whiskey gets them drunk:-) That mixture would just about catch anything swimming. I've caught bass, catfish, stripers, trout, crappie, carp etc.
