Well the neatest thing I have used to keep the pan dry was a self tanned muskrat pelt. I added oil to the tanned side and let it dry out so it was not greasy to the touch. I then cut the nose end wider and invert the pelt so it is fur out for looks and pelt side out for foul weather.
Slide this on the rifle from the stock up over the lock and pan. When it is time to shoot just tug the sleave back on the stock and your cheek rest on the pelt during the shot.
I have to make a new one because I wore that old one out. Any old well oiled rag can be carried over the lock and pan and just let loose to drop when you need to fire.
I have never had a problem using bore butter.
I also need to mend my coon possible bag or just make another.

My best advice on double duty patches. For cleaning and char-cloth: I use 100% cotton thermal longjohns that look like egg crate minitures. They're very absorbant and as char, the little pockets catch and hold sparks well. I find mine at thrift stores, Salv. Army stores, flea markets etc. I get them for .25 to.75 each piece. I wash them in just hot water to clean out softeners and sizing.
