hey bro, you make a very good point... why they just didn't let the hunters come in is beyond me! On a good note they did say they have the critters in a freezer some place and are going to check to see if the meat can be used for needy people. They did this in the cover of darkness! If they said they would let the hunters come in the folks around here would have been all worked up over nothing! Hey I have a funny one for everyone. I went to a meeting last year for north park. It was mainly about the lake...anyway someone asked what are they going to do about the critters. One of the bigwigs from the county said this...now get ready...He said, " If we let the grass around the lake grow tall, the birds will not see the lake and will not stop!" honest that is what he said!

The reasons the geese stay at north park, low predator population, easy to reach food in safe areas. If they would let the grass grow up around the lake the geese will move onto another location. But that would hamper the so called picnicers and fisherman. There are so many ways to take care of this,Why!!! Between north park killing and moraine oiling eggs. I hope I can find enough geese for the kids I have lined up this year. uuugggggggghhhhhhhh

Can't see how they can use them for food as they were gassed? I just have wonder if what they say is true about that? FDA or whoever may not agree with using critters dispatched by this method for human consumption.

that is why they are waiting...they said they need to check to see if the meat is good and if it can be used at all. I am sure it will come down to them not using the meat. They will wait until everyone forgets and then it will be too late. The powers that be...love the fact that the public has short memories! That is what they bank on! From local to national!

272 geese is a lot of wasted meat if not used for at least dog food!! Actually goose isn't bad prepared properly. I fillet the breast out, cut into medallions, marinade in montreal steak seasoning, olive oil, garlic & teriyaki & grill, quite good!! Also good done in a crock pot with seasoning salt, beef broth, leeks, crushed garlic, carrots, yams & celery.

the problem in north park isn't the geese it's all the yuppies. with all $200,000+ homes surrounding it they want to make it their play ground. this isn't what in was setup for. this will happen to a lot of our parks when they get surrounded by yuppies.

More like $500,000+ ... that is why the lake is disappearing from all the run off. A few years ago they said they would fix the lake...that did not happen because they took the money and used it for some thing else. They are going to try again in 2008 but i bet the money disapppears...again...a long with the lake.

orth Park – located in Hampton, McCandless and Pine Townships, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania – was created by Allegheny County in the 1920’s. The signature piece of this 3,010 acre county park is its lake. North Park Lake is a man-made lake at the confluence of Pine Creek and the North Fork of Pine Creek. When first constructed in 1935, the surface area of North Park Lake was approximately 75 acres and its depth was approximately 24 feet near the dam face. At that time, the watershed surrounding North Park Lake generally consisted of rural agricultural fields, pastures and isolated woodlots.
As the process of uninhibited urbanization progressed outward from the City of Pittsburgh, the landscape began to change. As development around the park continues to progress, forest cover and vegetated riparian buffers along streams are being removed and soils are being disturbed and covered instead by residential and commercial buildings, roads and parking lots.
Uncontrolled surface runoff carrying sediment to the lake from residential and commercial development in the Pine Creek basin in the mid to late 20th Century has resulted in a loss of 12 acres of open water and a loss of about half of the lake’s original depth. Due to enrichment from the excessive runoff, the lake has become eutrophic (low oxygen levels) and has seen an undesired increase in aquatic macrophyte (algae) growth. These factors have not only reduced the size of the original lake but also severely degraded the remaining aquatic habitat. For example, a shallower lake results in warmer water with less oxygen which in turn results in less variety of fish and other aquatic species. If nothing is done to improve the degradation caused by excessive sedimentation, the lake will eventually fill-in completely and become wetlands, and then a meadow. This will result in a loss of open water habitat and the ability to fish in the lake.

I live about 2 miles away however since I am always at work I do not go to the park. I do have many customers and friends that use the park daily. They all tell me it is bad! They say you cannot walk any place without stepping in IT! I knew north park had geese but I did not realize how many!! When I saw the story on KDKA I was amazed with the amount! They stopped permitting people to feed the geese years ago...but some folks still do..so that does not help! But Yes those critters are taking over the park!!
