BEEN hunting with a 7mm Rem. Mag for alomost 40 years...to be honest, it's more than enough gun for any PA animal. I get to see the 7mm Ultra Mag on the benchrest circuit for a few years now..they are big time bangers to say the least, more than you really need...but there ain't no such thing as to DEAD... If your a relaoder just tone it down a little bit..three or four less grains of powder will get it down to the Rem. Mag and that's all you'll ever need.. as with any MAGNUM, I've always found the slow powders to make things dirty in a hurry, since your not needing the extra velocity then switch to a little faster powder and shoot alot cleaner.. I always use H-4350 in all my magnum rifles, it's cleaner and I think alot more accurate in the long run, you may not get the velocity of the slow burners but you don't really need that extra 300 fps anyway... ALWAYS use premium bullets. NOSLER PARTITIONS and BARNEX XLC's will do just fine and can be bought anywhere..when you see the prices of factory loaded shells for it you'll be reloading in a hurry for it... GREAT CARTRIDGE, just like all the 7mm's in general... LOOKS like you need to do some sidehilling at full velocity... get yourself some of the BERGER 180 VLD's for that,, you'll really be reaching out an touching then, like a lightning BOLT at 500-800 yards...AWESOME !!

Frank your right about those prices of the factory rounds. Yeah its more gun than i need for the average whitetail hunt but i like to reach out there on occassion and am familar with the 7mm rem mag just had to have a new toy? I like that extra horse power now and then! How about the swift sirrocos?

DON't have any experience with the Scirrocos other than seeing the prices they charge for them..OUTRAGEOUS !!! I only comment on the things that I've seen with my own two eyes..I get to see lots of targets shot by just about everything sooner or later in the benchrest season... the Sierra MKS and the Bergers seem to be flying nicely out there past 500 yards to about 800..but to be honest, you don't see many 7mm's of any type shooting on the 1000 yards circuit..some, but not that many...most of the guys are always stating that there just isn't enough QUALITY bullets out there to make them competitive..just check out any 1000 yards match results and see what's listed... you'll see 25 times or more, 6mm Fast twists than 7mm's ...who would think that you could shoot a 108 grain bullet more accurately than a 175-80 grain 7mm bullet..but they do and can... doesn't make any sense but it's the truth.. ANY ultra mag will give you all the on target impact that you can believe..they have their little niche' for sure... I got to shoot a .338 Ultra Mag last summer.. I'd love to shoot a big ole' moose or brown bear with one of them.. JUST use premium bullets..watch those pass thru's.. not too many deer are going to stop one of them flying at those velocities...watch what's behind each deer, I'd say you could pass a 7mm at 3400 fps through at least three deer !!

It seems in my area at least , there is very little to select from for factory ammo for the 7 mm ultra mag.

I've shot a couple of animals with the 7mm UltraMag and I can say if you reload use a tough bullet. None of the animals were whitetails. Antelope and Mule Deer with the ranges being 117yds to 348yds. Anywhere beyond 200yds the Nosler Ballistic tip will work fine. Under 200yds the impact velocity will be too great. I learned this on a deer at 117yds. The bullet basically entered behind the front shoulder and fragged. I recovered the deer but there were a few tense moments. I did shoot a deer at 248yds with the same load and the deer was DRT. Pass thru with the bullet. A load I tried was some Retumbo and the Barnes TSX both in 140 and 160grs accuracy was pretty good with both. The best I've shot with Barnes bullets even though some swear by them. I wouldn't use any of the 4350 burn rate powders in the UltraMag. H1000, Retumbo(my favorite), US869, BMG, IMR 7828, and Re25 should work. I did encounter some pressure issues which were corrected by switching primers. I must say this is one of my favorite cartridges. The recoil is less than the .30 Ultra and it is just as deadly. Shoots a little flatter as a matter of fact. My rifle is a Sendero.
