asinglearrow, although I've hunted over beagles before, I have never attended a hound trial, how are they run/judged?? Always been curious about them. Do you have separate stakes for juvenile dogs as we do?? Are all run small pack/large pack?? I run pointing dog trials and am now waiting for my judges license number to judge them also. (To get a pointing dog FT license, you must have 5 broke (adult) stake wins or placements, were you required to have a set amount of wins/placements also??)

They are run in different formats and sizes for example ther is a 13" & 15" class 13 is for beagles that measure 13" and under from the top of the shoulder and the same for the 15" inch class anything over 15" does not qaulify we must use a measuring stand and it requires two judges to do as per AKC rules. our club mostly runs AKC gun dog brace but we also have what is called appachian gun dog that we run. other formats include SPO, small pack option. say we have a licensed gun dog brace trial for 13" and 15" they will be split up if there are 30 or more in the class they are run in trio's under 30 and they are run in pairs and they are judged by two AKC licensed judges who must score the hounds accordingly and must agree before a desicion or place is reached. to be certified as a judge you have to complete a training course and then judge with another established judge who has done 10 or more trials 10 times and when you have completed that you can judge the licensed trials! we have sanctioned trails and derby trials new judges can judge both of these, derby trials are for the pups and younger dogs. i could go on and on about it if there is any specific question feel free to ask or better yet they are open to the public to observe and to participate in but there are regulations as far as participation goes but anyone can observe! they are held all over and a good source of info is a magazine called hounds and hunting. We have a akc licensed trial coming up in the middle of april in imperial PA if anyone would like to attend? I hope i was of some help! Please feel free to contact me for any info either here by pm or email

I have 2 beagles. Best dogs in the world. I even keep them indoors. I have found that they tend to pack on the lbs. though, ;D

steelerfan58, Looks like there spoiled and ready for bed! You have to run them year round! I have a female that could pass for a twin of the bottom one in your pic and she is one heck of a dog she even retreves the rabbit to my feet! I currently have only 3, 2 males and a female at one time i had 11 just too many to keep in shape with so little time!

The local beagle club wouldn't accept him. The bottom dog was 2 years old when we got him. He was purchased as a pup by a man to run in field trial. Buddy barked at the guys other dogs, and was returned. When we got him, you couldn't even rub his belly, and he was a shell of a dog. IMO, the SOB abused him. To this day, he is scared to death of gunshots or any sudden noise. I've tried and tried. He makes a terrific pet. We got the female (top) about a year later, because the male was having separation anxiety. He would bark until he lost his voice when we left. She was a shelter dog. You couldn't ask for two dogs that get along better with each other or our 2 kids. Everyone in our family told us that "you can't keep beagles in the house". WRONG. The are fantastic house dogs.

I keep my beagle in the house, and everything is fine, except he snores.

You said it!!! My beagle is 6 years old and is kept in the house, she sleeps on the bed in the middle of me and my hubby and loves to hunt bunnies, but she also loves her food too. She is our second beagle, we had to put our first one down in "2000" at the ripe ole age of "15", who like our second one was kept in the house. We are proof that Beagles make great house dogs as well as being hunters also!! ...P.S. after a hard day of chasing bunnies, she sacks out on the couch...with her blankie! will post pics when I figure out how.

Go to photobucket.com, and set up an account. It's free. It is pretty self explanatory from there.

Strictly gun dogs for me. I've found trials to be "too political".
