Latest ice report:
A few die-hard steelhead fishermen have been getting lines into a few of the creeks but by Sunday most of the creeks already were getting to be in poor shape. There were open spots in Elk Creek on Wednesday, and at least a couple of steelhead were caught. Probably the best bet this weekend for steelhead on the west side of Erie is ice fishing at the Walnut Creek Access. Some steelhead were caught there this week. On the east side, there has been a bit more open water this week. As of early Thursday, Four Mile Creek and Seven Mile Creek were locked in ice, there was enough open water by the bridge over Twelve Mile Creek to wet a line and there was plenty of open water at Sixteen Mile Creek. Twenty Mile Creek was out of business. Just before the creeks were freezing, fresh steelhead were moving in, so the creeks are loaded. There was good fishing until Saturday, including a 13½-pound brown trout caught at an unidentified tributary. If the weather moderates this week, fishing could be great.
Ice fishing is getting under way at Presque Isle Bay. Although ice is too thin for anyone but the risk-takers on the bay itself, there was about 5 inches of ice Thursday at Horseshoe Pond and plenty of bluegill, some pike and largemouth bass were caught. There is also some good ice on Misery Bay but few ice fishermen have been on it. At least a couple of good bluegill catches were reported there. Ice appears to be at least 4 inches inside of Marina Lake, but be very cautious around docks and other structures that protrude through the ice. Some tough souls have been on the piers fishing for burbot, but no catches were reported. If there is sufficient ice near Waterworks, this should be a likely place to haul a steelhead through the ice.
Conditions vary at the area inland lakes. Trout and bluegill have been taken at Gravel Pit Pond. Look for some fun at Chapman Lake, where trout have recently been stocked in anticipation of the ice-fishing contest during Warren County Winterfest on Saturday and Sunday. Ice fishermen are getting onto the ice at the Allegheny Reservoir, but with high outflow through the dam creating currents in the lake this will be a treacherous place. Bluegill and some crappie have been caught in the Burtis Bay area of Chautauqua Lake but the ice has been marginal. Use caution everywhere.

Until I see pickup trucks on the ice - I DON'T DO ICE.. Have gone thru twice and they still haven't come down yet ! ha -ha ..Before it became a pain, we used to go to Lake Simco in Canada, but customs have been real picky lately - we would bring perch home by the garbage cans full - fishin for 4 days straight. we used to have a filet party - get about 15 guys cuttin fish. they would work for free or until the beer ran out!!
