I went to a thumb trigger release. During 3D season, I use it more like a BT release. For hunting, I can squeeze the shot off any time without the worry of it not firing using back tension. Kind of the best of both worlds.

Yes, a thumb trigger release can be shot with back tension. Once you've used a BTR for awhile it's not hard to transfer to a thumb trigger. You must first know what back tension really is and how it works to be able to do this. Alot of the guys I shoot with uses thumb triggers using back tension. They used a BTR for years before attempting a thumb trigger with back tension. Once you get BT down any release you use can be shot with BT. Even an index release can be shot using BT. Maybe that is why I had so much ease in using the Chocolate Lite- since I used the Carter Evolution + all indoor season.
For anyone looking to learn back tension, the Evo.+ is probably the best way to start.
