If I hunt from a treestand I go to the handgun. Otherwise go to the rifle.

On the first Saturday I passed on a big bodied 5 point that was 20 yards broadside. I was pushing deer for my brother-in-law and instinct made me draw and aim, but I really didn't need another deer so I let him walk. I think my .45 Colt is mad at me. ;D

Who will be carrying the hand gun as weapon of choice on Monday for bear and deer? I will be carrying my contender 35 rem.

Dumb question: You can go hunting with a handgun? I thought it was for the disabled hunters?

I'll be out the first 2 days of deer with my ruger srh .44 mag in 3b. Have shot a couple doe with it over the years, last one was 2000. let my sportsman carry run out and was too lazy to go get another until this year I finally went and got a cc permit so I decided it was time to take the ruger out again. have practiced with it a couple times lately and am planning on shooting it again this sunday. had to reload some shells b4 I go out....

Dumb question: You can go hunting with a handgun? I thought it was for the disabled hunters? Yes, you can hunt with a handgun. Why would you think it is only for disabled hunters?

A long time ago when I used to take a lot of diabled hunters out with me. They told me that normally a rifle was too cumbersome and a handgun suited the disabled much better. I used to hunt in the "grey zone" of the NY/PA border. At times we would walk back and forth between the 2 borders on drives. When we were certain we where in NYS we unloaded our guns and look the bolts out. A NYS DEC officer stopped us once and advised that we were in NYS and hunting with a handgun was illegal in both PA and NY unless you were disabled. I never gave it much of thought... until I read this post. I was purely curious. Excuse my ignorance.

The problem doesn't lie with you, it lies with the NY DEC officer who doesn't know what he is talking about. He just gave you bad intel for PA.
