I'll take a stab at explaining it...... It is Model 98 K-stands for Karbine, 1940 was the year it was made. Now without getting my books out the rest is just my guess work as during WW the Germans went to coding the guns so that the manufacture was unknown.. 42 is most likely the year put into service or upgrade... One thing I am sure of is the rifle was worth more before someone sporterized it... Some of the orginal mauser are bring a pretty good price today if we would have known back then I'd bet a lot more wouldn't have been sportized..... But enjoy it anyway they make for some nice rifles.... And the 8mm will shoot right with the best of them ................. Hope that helped!

The German K98 was the longest service bolt action rifle. It was in service with the German Army from 1899 to the end of WW II. It is a highly accurate rifle. In 1939 Hitler was handed the plans for a new weapon. One that I belive if it was made we would all be speaking German right now. Hitler turned it down. The reason was the K98 was so awsome of a rifle. Plus Hitler loved it from his time in the Army during WW I. The rifle I am talking about is was Kalisnkov (sp?) swore to his death bed he did not copy, but we all know the truth. The famed AK-47. The rifle is a STG-44. Google it. A remarkable weapon. It was put into production late during the war. Then shipped off to the western front ie how the Russians got thier hands on it. If it would have gone into production in 1940 copuld you imagine how the D-day invasion on Normandy would have turned out? My god it would have been a bigger blood bath then it already was.
