Just bought a new VHF Marine Radio. Got the Midland Nautico 1. 5 Watt VHF, up to 18 mile range, roger beep feature, 3 call tones, scan, 10 NOAA Weather Channels w/Weather Alert feature. Nice little portable hand held unit. Have an older Shakespeare model which will be kept as back-up. Anyone else keep these on board & what do you have??

Amen GRD.
I only ever needed to use one for emergency once. When i had a 22' trophy bayliner was down at Wachapreague inlet in VA & blew piston on motor. We had a console mounted motorola VHF Called Coast Guard & they sent their CG axillary out for us. We were about 5 miles out from ramp...woulda been a long row with no oars!! ;D

Loggy - If the USCG came to your rescue, consider your self lucky - Up here on Lk Erie. unless your are close to DEATH - they will not assist - they will broadcast on Channel 16 a "Marine Assistance broadcast" which is a request for local boater to assist you or the Coastie's will call Commercial Salvage for ya. Local one is Lake Shore Towing..(good bunch of guys) but will cost ya about $150 just to get them there. Unless you join their membership (about $50) for the season. unlimited tow's or assistance calls (best $50 you will ever spend).. If the Coastie's still tow boaters, on the ocean.. again your lucky

Thanks for the input boat capt!! The USCG base that recd my call first asked if there was any injured or a life threatening situation. I said no. They then transferred my call to the local Coast Guard a Auxillary who brought us back. 2 good ole Eastern Shore Boys...retired from USCG came out in their boat & towed us back. They wouldnt even accept a tip or anything. In fact, they offered help in finding a place to look at our motor. A letter of sincere appreciation was sent to local Wachapreague CG Station for sure!! Guess the difference is Erie mentality VS Eastern Shore hospitality of VA. A different world down there indeed...one i love!
