Wanted to start this thread to keep S.E. Pa. fish heads up on these three places.
I'm going to start fly fishing this year and these are the three places I intend to fish all year long.
I took a drive to Tulpehocken and Little Lehigh last weekend primarily because I've never been to either one of them and I wanted to kind of get the "lay of the land" so to speak.
The Tully is a tailwater creek at the base of Blue Marsh Lake. When I was there it was very high and fast, almost unfishable if you ask me, at least the upper portion at the basin of the dam and downstream for several miles.
There looked to be about 4-5 access areas where you can park, but the parking in these areas seem very limited as to the number of vehicles they hold. So if the fishing gets hot, there may be a problem finding a place to park.
The creek itself looks real "fishy". It is by far the largest creek I will have fished, in fact it looks more like a river to me. Keep in mind I'm used to fishing a lot smaller waters like French Creek.
The Little Lehigh looks to me to be a medium sized creek. Again keep in mind I have never fished it and haven't really seen a lot of it yet, but what I have seen of it, it looks like a real nice looking place to fish. So does the Tully, just not as big or intimidating as the Tully.
The Little Lehigh has a small fly shop right on the banks of it appropriately named "Little Lehigh Fly shop". They have a web site which is their name minus the caps and spaces. I'll no doubt be visiting that place prior to my stepping into the water.
French Creek has been my water of choice for the past 10 years or so. The only difference is, this year I intend to be fishing it with fly gear. They have a .9 mile stretch of it that is FF only catch and release that I have never fished due to not ever fly fishing before. It is the closest creek to where I live. I'll no doubt be spending more time on it then the other two, but the other two are only a 30 minute drive from me, French Creek is about a 10 minute drive.
I'm also considering joining a fly fishing club by the name of "Dame Juliana League Fly Fishers" who have adopted French Creek as their home waters. They have been around for about 30 years or so, initially their membership was very small, but of late they seem to have been growing and now have a membership of about 150 members.
We'll see, I haven't made my mind up on that yet. They are putting on a one day fly fishing course, open to the public, I'll probably attend. I'll get a feel for them there and make a decision after that. Either way, I could use the instruction.
As the season progresses I'll try to get some pictures of all three places, maybe I'll take my son with me to get some shots of me fumbling around with my fly gear to.
Either way he's coming with me to use his spinning gear. He may not be able to fish the FF only spots, but he can "get his line wet" everywhere else. Plus I need to get him away from the xbox 360 and out in the outdoors fishing with me. I know he likes to fish, it's just getting him off the xbox that's the challenge.
Alright, enough is enough. LETS GO SPRING, GET HERE ALREADY. ;D
