"I would say walleye fishing has begun," said Dan Seaman at Elk Creek Sport Store.
Trollers are catching walleye along shore in depths as shallow as 8 feet in the evenings. During the day some trollers are starting to pick up walleye in the 30-foot range. That is happening at several places along the westside shoreline.
Off the condos just west from Presque Isle has been good, there has been good fishing near Elk Creek and on the east side, some walleye have been caught east of Shade's Beach.
Casting off the beach has been very inconsistent, probably because of the mud line. Walleye stay with the bait and the bait generally stays out of muddy water. There have been some walleye caught off the shore near Elk Creek, Walnut Creek and Trout Run. Watch for a couple days of south wind for the better surf fishing.
Perch fishing is also getting better, though it has not gotten near its peak. Among the better places have been off the point of Presque Isle peninsula at a depth of about 41 feet to 50 feet, in 30 feet to 37 feet off Trout Run and in 36 feet of water off Elk Creek. By the weekend, if the weather cooperates, the better perch fishing locations should be well marked by clusters of boats.
Smallmouth bass fishing continues to be very good, weather permitting. Sometimes cloudy water brings them close enough to shore to use surface lures. Catching a 5-pound smallmouth on a surface lure would be a thrill. As usual, the best smallmouth fishing is on the east side but on the west side you can find action from Virginia Beach to the Ohio line. Also watch for channel catfish at the mouths of Elk Creek and Walnut Creek.
Fishing is hopping in Presque Isle Bay. Both largemouth bass and smallmouth are very active. You can have a great time now using poppers at Horseshoe Pond or in the lagoons. Perch are being caught from the North Pier. A lot of bluegill and some crappie have been caught at Misery Bay.
Inland fishing is also good. Catch-and-release bass fishing is very good at Chautauqua Lake. Smallmouth have been hitting at the rock pike off the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club and off the No. 3 buoy at Warner Bar using 3-inch tube jigs. Some walleye are being caught by trolling No. 9 or No. 11 Rapalas just off the weed line from the Bell Tower down to Prendergast.
