Found out with four boxes through my .270 that even with a solid bech rest that I can't keep groups under 2.5" at 100 yds with the 130 gr sst. Verified that it's not me, because the same gun put a five shot group of the cheap Winchester Power Points right at an inch with three of them touching each other. I know each gun likes something differnt, but I'm highly disappointed that for a "premium" bullet that these shot so poorly for me. For the record I tried some SST ML bullets in my .45 cal CVA and also got terrible results...grops around 4'5 " at 100 yds, while I can cloverleaf 3 shots with the 225 grain powerbelts on a good day. Wonder if anyone else has had bad luck with these bullets? I did take the sst's out Monday and took a large doe with one at about 50 yards. Terminal performance was satisfactory....but that accuracy is too subpar for me. I guess iIll be using the cheap stuff if that's what the gun prefers. I did try a handful of handloaded winchester cases with 130 gr Nosler ballistic tips with only slightly better results than the SST.

JAKE, I agree, 2.5 inch from any modern rifle is unacceptable !!! Lots of variables with this type of problem. FIRST, is the barrel copper free, I've found this to be the problem most of the time.. COPPER BUILD UP...this can ruin accuracy more than an other factor that I know of... make sure, looking from the muzzle that you don't see those copper colored stripes for the last few inches of the barrel.. modern, copper removers can be bought at any sporting goods store.. most work extremely well, BUT read the instructions carefully. Sweet's 7.62 will clean the worst for sure. CLEAN the barrel, there's lots of great products out there and tons writtten on the subject. Hunting rifles are not benchrest rifles, they have very very little in common, other than they go bang. BUT most are capable of shooting well under 2 inch groups.. hunting bullets are not benchrest either.. the target is as big as a soccer ball compared to an 1/16 inch dot. I have found over the years that some bullets work and some don't and there's no way to actually predict which one other than to shoot them... but I've also found that with cases of that size, some powders work most of the time and other never seem to work... I only use two types of bullets for hunting, Nosler Partitions and Barnes X-bullets, they are not benchrest but seem to work in most rifles and both are super for hunting... I've also found that H-4350 for whatever reason in cases of this size seems to almost always give great accuracy and it is not temperature sensitive, so many shoot them in the summer time and can't hit a thing once the temperature falls into the teens.. I also only use remington 9 1/2 magnum primes.... I've tried just about everything made in every caliber, I reload for at least 40 different calibers... I shoot super long range benchrest matches and have get a chance to talk to some of the best shooters in the world... they seem to have their little likes and dislikes also... but keep in mind, hunting is NOT benchrest shooting....and should never be treated as such... some rifles just will not shoot some bullets, powders or primers, and never will, there are lots of factors, lots....even the shooters abilities comes into play, trigger pull can have a remendous impact on scores and group size.. don't be afraid to experiment, but there are some old reliables that usually work, PARTITIONS, H-4350, REM 9 1/2's... all old reliables for sure.

Thanks, Frank. The rifle is a NEW Ruger Model 77 Mark II stainless in .270 with a Nikon 4.5-14 scope. Heritage....you can keep 'em! I'll probably try some handloads this spring when I have more time to play with it, but I was just really surprised that the cheap ammo outshot the premium polymer tipped bullets. I'm not a fan of Remington ammo, esp their brass, but I like their premier accutip bullets. I may load some of them in Winchester brass. I'll have to try that powder, Frank. Thanks for the tips.
