Accirdung to the very best rifle experts of the 19th century and early 20th century, the square of the bullet base diameter (in inches) x 150 and then divided by the rifle twist in inches equals the optimum bullet length for the gun. The square of the base of a 50 caliber bullet would be .25. Mu8ltiply that by 150 results in 37.5. Divide that amount by the twist. For a 1:14 twist the optimum bullet length is 2.6 inches. For a 1:28 twist, the bullet should be approximately 1.3 inches. For a 1:48 twist the bullet should be approx .80 inches. This is known as the Greenhill formula.
Obviously then a little short 250 grain bullet is NOT the optimum for a gun unless it has a twist of around 1:56. Not saying it won't hold a group at short distances like 100 yds. It just isn't the best choice. Such a bullet is too light to carry well for distance shooting.
A word of caution. What is safe in one manufacturer's firearm may not be safe in another. Stay within the manufacturer's reccommendations for your gun. What someone might easily be able to use with a margin of safety in a White, will be dangerous in a CVA Appollo. Also remember that some substitute powders create substantially higher pressures than black powder. 150 grains of old reliable black might be ok in your gun, but the same of a "hot" substitute could be unsafe.
It would be tragic if some greenhorn stuffed 5 pellets of New Fangle high pressure substitute in his cheap Brazilian made Deer Whomper Special because someone claims they did it with their gun.
What risks you take with your face are totally up to you. Be careful! We need to compare apples with apples. Despite all else, there are better quality and lesser quality guns out there and they will probably react differently to the same charges.
My Marathon Arms in line gets 17 grains of 3fg and a .310 PRB It can put five shots on a postage stamp at 25yds.
I also have a Miller 50 cal in-line with a false muzzle. A 450 grain bullet and 70 grains of 2f powder work just fine out to 350 yards.

Hey Loggy! There's a new bullet in town. I named them the .504 UC Shorts ;D as I drew up the specs and LEE made the molds for us. Batchief shot a lousy one-hole 5 shot group at 50 yards using some from his first batch - then his head exploded. ;D The bullets come out of the molds at .507" by .895" length and weigh ~443 grains in pure lead. The molds seem pretty consistent so far. I think they will not only do well in the 1:24" twist of the White .504 but also in the 1:28" twist of most other inline .50 calibers, not to exclude faster twist traditionals (Greenhill notwithstanding ). Bull Shop should by now have received a pair of the molds. No one has really reported 100 yard results yet (Bat did shoot at 100 yards after he shot the 50 yard one-holer, but his head was by then giving him major problems).

I like that .504 UC Short look plus weighing in at 443 grains will help the ole shoulder a lil!! ;D Hard to believe you got the BIG 496 Trashcan Man(aka batchief) to consume a Lite!! ;D Tell me where/how to buy some!! Will Dan be making these?? I'm always game in experimenting with new bullets.

Well,,,,UC didn't explain that I did this less than a week after I had the nose-straightening,,roto-rooter, bone extracting sinus surgery..... Mah head was hurtin',,,but I had to get outta the house. What better way to indulge in self-abuse after said surgery than shootin'?? ;D This is the 5 shot 50 yard group using 70gr. of Swiss 3F under the UC Shorts. This 91 was previously set up to shoot the 496gr. Trashcans at 100 yards My 100 yard attempt had the first 3 touching. I tried to time the llast 2 between head throbs and had a flyer. The group was probably 4 inches.

Thanks, Loggy. I forgot to mention that I did indeed use Mike's unlubed felt wad over the powder charge. It's just become a standard load now, due to I hate "leading" in the bore. The snozz ain't 100%,,,,but it's getting there. A snozz this big takes time..... ;D

Hey UC, the way those metal commodity markets are skyrocketing...its a good investment in lead if nuttin else!! ;D
I know Dan's 460 MT NEx's fit my .504 Super 91 perfectly. I like the idea of a lil shorter which i may also try in some of my 1-28 bbls too in addition to my 1-24 Super 91. Its fun to experinment!

Woodgoat musta shot some today (he just got his molds yesterday I think). He posted this pic over at DWBs but was having trouble with the post so he deleted it - but not before I snagged it. ;D Bullets seem to be a little powder sensitive but his top group should do... That's from a 97/.504 that he got from me - unfired when I sold it.
