How can you tell if the scope is vertically aligned with the gun barrel? Even if it is aligned perfectly with the barrel, how do you know you are not canting it when you shoot?
I got thinking about this with long range shooting. If you adjust for elevation and the cross hairs are not perfectly aligned vertically, you will get horizontal adjustment unintentionally.

I use a scope aligner but it's not necessary. Find a level horizontal plane, like a window sill, then place your gun level vertically,in a vise if possible, and focus on the level plane. Move your scope so that the horizontal reticule corresponds to the known horizontal plane.
