Hit the Owassee Area of Pine Creek at 0800 Saturday Morning. A nice get together! I haven't seen JM since our last SR outing. Flows on Pine were nice and the clarity was just ever so slightly stained...
We covered a long stretch of the DH-ALO area. JM did better than Tom and myself. He scored a few hits and landed about 3 or 4 on soft hackles. Tom and I drew the giant goose-egg. We both got a hit or two but couldn't seem to land them. However, we did see fish all day. I waited with anticipation for the morning hatch... ALL DAY. Caddis hatched steadily all day but we didn't see a lot of mayflies coming off.
This run is wide and choppy. We did see a few splashy rises but nothing that we could say was cyclic. See the Filson hat at the foreground? That's Tom sitting on the bank.
Looking downstream towards the Canyon. See the kayakers on the left? They came down the creek and where bitching at one another. They got stuck on the riffle just out of the pic on the left.
We must have seen about 100 canoers and kayakers passing in front of us. The trout didn't seem bothered by the boat traffic. We were a little. A few of the kayakers almost hit me as I waded. Most boaters seemed like they had never paddled a canoe or kayak before. A lot of the 'yaks were LOADED down with gear to where the cockpit was almost taking on water even in the calmer sections of the creek. I'm sure a few of them got wet or tipped over in the rapids. We even found a full Bud pounder floating in the creek. FRINGE BENEFITS of flyfishing! And the bikini hatch was spotted... SWEET!
Then in the afternoon the rains came. As I was standing in a run I heard the sound of a frieght train coming at me... it was a wall of sheet rain.
The calm before the storm.... Say "fromage" JM.
10 minutes later... DOWNPOUR with thunder and lightning!
Then the sun came back out and it looked like it never even rained! (except for the raindrop on my camera lens)
A good day fishing in the Canyon. I will be hitting Pine again real soon! This is one of my favorite creeks to fish. I love big water!
Except the next day I woke up with a nasty cold from being out in the rain. I'm still all stuffed up and snotty!
