Who is headed out to chase the white rabbits? I will be headed out to some areas in 3D and 3B. Two hunters and two shooters in this pack. We don't have room for other shooters in the truck but welcome some if they can transport themself to the hunt.
Where are you headed and with how many hounds?
The hounds are tuned up and will be rested up so the show should be fun.
Rule of thumb is if you don't have snow for deer it is easy to see the hare in the forest.

I haven't seen one in my area in my lifetime, but my grandfather said he had killed some before I was born. Sure would love to try it, but unfortunately its a bit too far to travel for me. Great offer though.

New Guy - Good luck chasing down those white rabbits. They are few and far between.

We only take one a year. Unless we hit areas with multiple runs than we take one each per year. We just love the sound of the hounds and it is a true test of what your hound is made of to stay on trail over the greater distance. Hare hunting here in Pa is all about the dogs not the shooters.
We hunt upstate NY when we want to do shooting. I have also been offerd to tag along up to Maine. The one time I was up there without my hounds I did more coyote shooting than hare.

Well Monday was a bad day to be in the woods, the wind was blowing and we could not hear the hounds. Lost both dogs. Recovered one 1and a half hours later and the second one 3 and a half hours after that.
Tuesday was a rest day for the hounds as I went for deer with the smoke stick. Seen more coyote tracks than deer tracks.
Today (Wed) was a great day for shoes. The best day I ever had in Pa. We did not have a chase on our first stop (honey hole) but than we talked to a guy that lost two dogs and moved down the road and had our first chase. A good half hour chase that ran into private land so we hooked the hounds up and drug them back to the truck. The next stop was right out of the truck. I did not have my gun out of the truck when the hounds opened up.
My brother missed his shot but it ran into me and I stopped it for the hounds.
We had three more chases on the way back to the truck 150 yards away. (new honey hole)
Time for coffee. As we headed out for coffee we talked to the guy that lost the hounds. they were still missing.
After the coffee run we tried another spot and had three more runs. I seen all three rabbits but was without my gun as it was done for the day/year.
Stopped at another spot and we jumped three more. The rabbits seemed plentiful so my brother hunted as I tended the hounds. Wish I had my camera because I seen two of the three rabbits. My brother seen the other one but did not have a shot.
One last stop and the hounds got two going at the same time. Each hound took off after separate rabbits. This took us to almost dark so we called the dogs off and bought them a sub on the way home.
Wish we had a JR hunter with us to get hooked on hares.
May start to rethink my one per season limit if the population is growing as I suspect.
BTW the guy still had one lost dog as we were leaving.

Thursday was a great day to run shoes. We had runs at all our stops. Most runs lasted about an hour. The last run of the day my brother nailed a shoe.
Friday / today we started out looking for cotton tail. We hit a few spots on SGL where we always could find action to prime the hounds. Dead. The snow was on the ground since Monday and there were no rabbit tracks to be found. Moved to try an old spot that had both cotton and shoes. Found rabbit tracks and coco puffs but we could not get a run. On the way back to the truck the hounds jumped a shoe, ran it for 1hour and 45 min in circles and eights only seen it once before it left the county. Got the dogs back an hour later and went home.
Going to find a few guys sober enough to take after this swamp shoe in the morning. Happy new year.
