So I am completely new to fishing and have just become interested in it because of my boyfriend. His birthday is at the end of August and I want to plan a surprise weekend fishing/camping trip in PA. Is there anything specific I should know about fishing during that time of year or anyone have any recommendations of great places to fish in PA? Thank you!!

Plan a trip to a state park. Call in your reservations now for the time youll want to be there. They usually have lakes at these parks with different assortments of fish youll have fun.

If it's not too far, Erie is a fantastic place to fish. There are different piers to fish from or, for more fun, you can go out on one of the perch boats. It only costs like thirty bucks for a half day, bait included.

In 2009, if I remember correctly, the Fish Commission changed the rules about the trout stamp. If you fish in approved trout waters after May 31, you only need a stamp if you are fishing for trout. If you are fishing for any other species, you don't need a stamp. If you would happen to catch a trout by mistake, it must be released unharmed immediately. If it dies, you could be fined. Sounds crazy, but a lot of regulations are. The definition of "fishing for trout" can be a little confusing to some.
TROUT/SALMON PERMIT A current Pennsylvania trout/salmon permit is required to fish for trout or salmon in Pennsylvania waters. An angler “fishes for trout or salmon” when he or she: Takes, kills, or possesses, while in the act of fishing, a trout or salmon from any PA or boundary waters. Fishes in waters under special trout/salmon regulations. Fishes in any Class A Wild Trout Waters or Wilderness Trout Streams or their tributaries. Fishes in streams and rivers designated as approved trout waters on March 1 through May 31.

Thanks for that information guys, I found out what I need to know about getting a fishing license and the whole trout/salmon regulation business from the PA Fish and Boat Commission website so thats good. Was just wondering if anyone could be a little more specific about a scenic area to fish and camp?

East and west piers are good areas to fish. The north and south piers are right on the channel between Presque Isle Bay and the main lake. The water there is deep and the fishing is very good all year. There are the lagoons you can walk to and largemouth should be hitting in August. If you wade, you can fish along the peninsula side of the bay. Go to fisherie.com and you will find all kinds of information, including maps.

If you are camping, I suggest Hill's Family Campground. It's probably 4-5 miles from Presque Isle. They have both cabin and camper rentals. When I camped there in the past, it was in a tent. Their sites were level and spacious. If you decide on a trip to Erie, let me know. I am planning a trip up there sometime in August. There's a chance I might be able to get you a fishing trip on the big lake.

I love Lycoming County, Slate Run - not sure how good the fishing is at Ricketts Glen but it's a beautiful spot.
