This is a site I found with good info on them. www.morelmushroom.info/Not sure how brave I'll be at picking them myself, some of the false morels look pretty similar to the true morels.

Your false morel doesn't have the honeycomb appearance of a morel, it has like a wavy, brain texture look to it. A search for morel mushrooms on your search engine will bring up many good and imformative sites. Some are; www.morels.com, www.morelmania.com, www.morelheaven.com, www.morelsandmore.com, www.fungifest.com, www.mushroomexpert.com. Like I said before, check the woods for stands of tulip/poplar. When the mayapples are starting to grow is a good time to start looking. In these areas you'll find the black morel which only grows about 3 to 5 inches high. Small time frame for picking them, as they only last from 3 to 5 days before decomposing. But there are many flushes of them popping up at different times to keep you busy foraging for a month or so.

Morels don't start showing up in the woods until the middle of April or so.
