St. Croix, 8ft. It works great, other than it misses alot of fish... I suppose I could take the blame for that.

4wt - 7' - Custom built on plum color Pacific Bay 2pc blank. A sweet little small stream rod. About $65 invested.
6wt - 9' - Custom built on a black American Tackle 4pc blank with American Tackle mother-of-pearl reel seat. About $120 invested.
8wt - 8'6" - Originally a fiberglass Berkeley Buccaneer, stripped to the reddish brown blank and rebuilt completely. Nice slow action. Started as a rod building test, became a favorite bass rod. About $38 invested (including the original $8 I paid for the rod at an auction).
8wt - 9' - Originally a Guide Series Frontier 2pc that I rebuilt after the wraps started to get cloudy. Mostly used at the beach in NJ. About $90 invested.
The most I have spent on a rod is $120 for the 6wt, and a big chunk of that was the mother-of-pearl reel seat. I agree with skwirl...I like the VW's over the Rolls Royce, but I like my VW customized! You truly don't have to drop $300 or more on a rod if you don't want to.

My go to rod is a 7.5' Quarrow 5wt with a Fin-ite reel.I also have a 8.5 Reddington 4pc 8wt that I plan on hitting the river with this year.Maybe even a trip to the Elk River for some steelies.I also have 2 bamboo rods-a 4pc and 2pc.I don't know who made them or what wgt. they are.I don't fish with those, though.

can anyone suggest a fairly cheap good rod for a beginner... ive never fly fished before but would like to get into it I've never tried one, but I hear that Scientific Angler sells combos that are good starter rods, and for the price they charge you get the reel and line, too. Also, Cabelas has some good budget priced starters. You can start out spending $1000 or $75 to get everything you need to get started. Just don't let anyone tell you that you have to have a high end rod to enjoy fly fishing. More critical is, do you have someone who can show you how to cast? You can teach yourself (I did), but it is sooo much easier if you can have someone teach you. The first couple of hundred casts are usually a semi controlled disaster ending in a tangle of line, but every now and then you get it just right and man does it feel sweet! Before you know it, the tide has turned and you find that only the occasional cast goes completely haywire. That never ends. But what will cement the deal is that first good fish on a fly...it is addictive. Good luck, and I hope you take the plunge.
