my stalk is a magnificent stalk but it seems to have lost it's poly or larquer in spots and i want to redue it but not sure what exactly to use, i was thinking poly cause it's stronger, BUT this stalk was engraved by an indian MANY years ago, before i was ever even a thought, so i was thinking lightly sand with 320 or 400 gr and then light coats of a clear poly. Any help would be GREATLY appriciated.

Is it just a stain stock or does it have a clear on it?

see i'm not sure, not my original gun, although it may just be stain, cause in those effected areas it is looking like the stain is coming off

Is it dark or lite? If the stain looks to be rubbing off I would say it is not cleared. There are alot of different methods you can do. I use linseed oil on all my stocks and not the cooked just raw, I also used walnut shells already for the more darker stocks. I would try to stay away from sanding and try to use products like this to find a happy medium.

That is a nice stock. If you take sandpaper to that thing it would be like using an eraser, it would take your carvings right off. What is the green color was that like that or did it turn that. It definetly dosn't look like it is cleared and I'm going to talk to my uncle who is a wood worker and see what advice I can get from him for ya.
