I have found for channels that cut shad (or herring if shad not available) is by far my best bait. Fresh is best to hold on hook. Once frozen it gets too soft.
I cut in strips(meat w/skin on) average 4" or longer and normally use a "Fish Finder" style rig or bottom bouncer type if real heavy rock structure. I like large Mustad Beak style hooks (3/0-4/0) that have baitholder barbs. Our channel cats normally run anywhere from 5-15 lbs. Nice size to eat and a blast to catch!

I use nightcrawlers to about four on one hook.

I seine creek chubs, 5" seem to do the best for me for big channel cats but I've caught them on hot dogs, kielbasa, night crawlers, chicken livers, and commercial stink bait.

Hard to beat shad. One has to be careful if fishing the lower susky where there is a moratorium on shad. Guess a fish wco could nail ya if you had one on board even if bot at fish market..

i aslo do well on whole fallfish, you would think they'd be a lil big but if you ever extend a big cats mouth all the way open you will understand why they can make large baits disappear...lol
