Fishing reports from Lake Erie this week have been affected severely by cold front conditions and rough water. Water spouts were spotted Thursday. Last weekend both walleye and perch fishing were very good, but since Sunday mostly larger boats have been able to fish.
Walleye fishing has been good to excellent on the west side of Erie in depths of 20 feet to 30 feet. On the east side, there has been good walleye fishing from the North East Marina westward along the cliffs at least to the mouth of Twelve Mile Creek.
Spoons and nightcrawler harnesses run off Dipsy Divers are effective. Stick baits continue to be effective on both sides. Fire tiger has been one of the most reliable color patterns. Deep-diving stick baits run off planer boards are also catching some walleye.
Look for perch in depths of 30 feet to 40 feet west of Erie, at about 50 feet off the point of Presque Isle and anywhere from 20 feet out to 45 feet off the cribs.
Bluegill fishing has been excellent in Presque Isle Bay. Hot spots have been in the shallower bays. Both largemouth bass and smallmouth bass are being caught in good numbers.
Inland fishing also was affected by the cold front conditions. Just barely inland in the lower, deeper pools of Elk Creek, fishing for channel catfish has been fair to good. Some of the better fishing is by the red barn at the end of the road on Fish and Boat Commission land.
Bass and muskie season at Chautauqua Lake opens Saturday. Try the southern basin in the Arnolds Bay and Greenhurst areas for largemouth bass. Cast spinnerbaits or twitch stick baits just above the weeds. For muskie, cast jerk baits or stick baits in the northern basin from Prendergast north to We-Wan-Chu Cottages. Allegheny Guide Service reported catching some very nice walleye this week in the weed beds.
Walleye fishing has been fair at Pymatuning Lake. Crappie fishing is still good in brush piles at Shenango Lake.
