In my area, Erie Co, the numbers are down. We're lucky to put up 2 all day in many SGLS in Wattsburg and Albion. I did get out a couple times to the ANF and definitely plan on going this year!! We put up 18 the first time and about 27 the second, it was awesome!! Some of the most fun I've had hunting in years.

BTW, if anyone has good areas for them and no dogs, I'd be more than happy to bring some dogs their way........ ;D

The reason for low numbers of grouse is the deer and turkey populations. Another factor is that our woodlands are getting older. what we need is some clear cutting to get the thick timber back. It was all explained to me this past fall and I don't remember all the details but that is the gist of it. How about Indiana County, my son lives there and puts up grouse in archery season all the time.

I agree! The forests definitely need some clear-cutting done, they did some around here, but pretty small areas. The clear-cuts are only 5 yrs old, am anxious to see if they make a difference in another few years. I will also try my best to reduce the turkey population by one this spring.....

Bought my property in '88 - could always count on flushing at least a couple of grouse, everytime out... Haven't seen or heard a grouse for at least the last 10 yrs - and I have excellant grouse habitat (grape vines tangles - hemlocks and briars- plus lots of second growth saplings)and i have been all over my 60 acres..

zodiak try the area south of tionesta take 36 south out of town. when you get to the top of the hill hang a sharp right at the next intersection turn left. this road takes you parallel to 36 after about three miles you'll come to a long straight away. the woods are very thick on both sides of the road. this area was cut for gypsy moth damage . now it's growing back and should be greta for grouse. you can't get lost every left takes you back to 36. and a lot of the rights take you back down to 62. but this area is thousand of acres. use to hunt deer and turkey there years ago lots of logging roads to go down and hunt.

Just a thought, but perhaps the PGC should be shortening Grouse season.
Didn't they just lengthen Grouse Season a year or so back ?

The grouse numbers in my area have been very good the last few years. From what I've seen so far with all the chicks around this year should be no different. Of couse I live in the heart of a logging area with tons of state owned land around and they are always cutting to make some habitat.
