I am trying to submerge myself in information about deer in the next few months. I have read some of the posts in this forum and have seen mention of dozens of plants and other stuff being planted for the deer. One post mentioned turnips, which is new to me, and rubis. Can anyone tell me about some of the natural browse species deer prefer and things that can be planted to encourage antler growth and healthier does and fawns? I know the topic is broad. I am planning to acquire my own land in the near future and also try to get neighbors to help with food and cover as well. No plow or rapidly spreading vegetation is a certain plus.

Diet Some of the preferred Whitetail foods, throughout their range, are: acorns, persimmons, apples, honeysuckle, clover, corn, greenbrier, lespedeza. One of the favorites, and commonly sought out wherever they may be found, are acorns from the White Oak tree. White Oak acorns have less tanic acid, and are "sweeter" to the deer. Some favorite crops and planted food plots are: alfalfa, oats, rye, winter wheat, field peas, austrian winter peas, vetch, alyceclover, turnips. this is just a small selection of natural foods you must also consider natural browse

if you plan on planting your own try sugar beets. the deer don't seem to bother them much till they ripen ,which if planted at the right time will happen near the season. also check out some seed and plant catalogs on line they have lots of plants that will do what you want. by the way a great way to start learning about your prey.
