My wife and I would like to do a day trip on the fourth of July. We would prefer to drive no more than three hours one way. I'm from Fayette County in SW PA. Anything interesting to visit in your area?

I don't do very well in crowds. Has something to do with saying what I feel. LOL. My daughter lives in Highland Park, and she already suggested that. We would rather do something outdoor all day.

Here in Bedford Co you could go to the Old Bedford Village, which is a village constructed from all old houses and other buildings from the 1800's and early 1900's, or you could go to Raystown Lake, and either rent a boat or take a ride or their big excursion boat, and on the way here or headin' home, you could stop in to the Flight 93 memorial and/or the Quecreek mine rescue site.

We've been to all those places, except Raystown. Maybe we'll try gravity hill!

yeah, i forgot about gravity hill. Well, if you do decide to do something around Bedford Co, let me know ahead of time and I'll PM ya with my phone number. Maybe we could hook up for lunch or dinner or something. We have a neat new restaurant here in my little country town with real good food. They're open 7 to 1 on the 4th. Have you gone to Johnstown and gotten a ride on the Incline Plane? Been to the flood museum?

My son decided he wants to go with us. We will be headed up to Crooked Creek to do some geocaching and hopefully some fishing. Anyone ever been there? Any suggestions? We will probably head over towards Jefferson County then head home. If anyone knows anything to do or see in this area, please let me know.

Well, I only know a little of eastern Jefferson which isn't far from me. If you head SE you can see fireworks at Lakemont Park near Altoona, Del Grosso Park (formerly Bland's park which better describes Del Grosso sauces) has fireworks as well. Both of those are on I99 and you can hit 22 back homeward. There is also a "one of the biggest displays in PA" at Penn State in State College. You can actually park at either of the 2 walmarts and see most of the show. From there you can hit 322W/99S and take 22 homeward.
If your real nice and can follow directions such as park at the gate and walk till you get to the reservoir and call me. I can show you a crystal clear native stream that is walk in (or ATV) only. My kids and I are heading there tomorrow around 9am or so and camping overnight to come home Sunday. Its a small stream called Black Bear Run just off SR 504 between Phillipsburg and Black Moshannon State Park. Its about 45 minutes East of the Jefferson County line, 60 minutes North of Lakemont and Del Grosso, and 40minutes NW of State College.

tbass, thanks for the invite. I don't think I'll have time to head that far east. In the fall of 2010, my son should be heading to State College to continue his education. I will probably be spending a lot of time in that area. Maybe we can get together for some hunting or fishing.

That sounds good. I know of a handful of tucked away areas to hike and fish.

turns out its a good thing you couldn't make it. The path on the upper end of the stream was so over grown even I had trouble following it in some places. We had a good time even though the kids didn't catch anything.
