Cats are my favorite fish to eat, with crappie close second. That cat was a hair under 25" and fat. Bigger than I generally keep to eat. Like to leave them to breed. I like them in the 12 to 17" or so size and from clean water. (LOL)
Havent been out much targeting cats yet this season, but will be very soon.

I thought that one about 20" or so, not 25 (hard to tell from pic), I agree, I dont keep them that large either. I try to fish clean waters for them, generally the lake mouths of a few creeks by me. Our run is about done, was slow this year. You can get them year round...just not near as consistant as the spring run.

Yeah, that cat for its length was very thick from belly to back. Makes the length deceptive. We have a tape in the boat and measure everything worth measuring.lol No guestimates necessary. We catch a ton of them in the monongahela river in the right places. Pretty much all summer. But I wouldnt eat em. For that I hit a few lakes, but dont get nearly the numbers. Here is another pic of the catfish above. looks like a totally different fish depending on how you hold them. This looks like a longer thinner fish even though its the same one.

Congrats to your dad, good looking cattie, were you fishing at night? I do most of my cat and walleye fishing at night, great time to fish.

Yeah. we fish mostly at night for everything we fish for. Best catfishin', walleye and by far the best crappie action we have is at night. Sure does beat getting sun-baked too. We get out about an hour before dark and fish throughout the night. Or get out around 2 or 3 a.m. and fish until an hour or two after sunrise.
Buddy had a really good channel on this past weekend. a definate thirty some incher. Lost it at the boat. We also got into some average 12 to 18" cats and had fun boating 8 or 10 apiece.
