Last year in the late 5C muzzeloader season I saw plenty of deer from my stand and let them all walk as they were a little smaller than what I would want to harvest. I finally got a good shot on a Big Doe. My CVA Optima Pro Magnum #209 primer was loaded with a 245 grain, .50cal powerbelt AT (green) bullet and 100 grains of triple seven 50/50 pellets. I raised the gun slowly and placed the fiber optic sights on the vitals of the animal and squeezed the triger. This should be where I post a pic of my harvested deer right? Not quite. Before I noticed, the barrel of the gun was strait up in the air and I was still holding the foregrip in my left hand? The deer stood there looking at me for a second and then left flicking its tail at me like take that buddy.
I still really had no idea of what had actualy just happened. I climbed down out of the stand and went to check for any sign of a hit on the deer. It was a clean miss, I have no idea where the round actually went which really bothered me. I took a closer look at the gun and I noticed the lug that the foregrip was screwed to broke off of the barrel at the welds . Not only could I have been seriously injured by the gun if it were to have hit me in the face, if I were a smaller or younger person or if I were hunting from a smaller stand it may have knocked me off of my stand causing me to fall or I could have hit someone with the bullet on the other side of the hill. I called CVA and talked to the rep on the phone, he told me he has never heard of this happening and told me they would have to see if it would be covered under warranty. I wasnt really thrilled with the attitude I got from the rep and the way he assumed it was from me abusing the firearm, I only fired the gun 4 times before this happened and never with more than 150gr of powder, which the magnum models are supposed to handle without a problem.
I got the gun back from CVA, covered under warranty, with a new barrel, this time the lug was dovetailed to the barrel, not welded. I also noticed they no longer offer the Optima Pro models. If you or anyone you know own a CVA or are planning on purchasing one I strongly recomend you unscrew the forearm and check to see if the lug is welded or dovetailed to the barrel.
I have not shot the gun since I got it back last year, I may sell it and buy a T/C.
