Catching fish in the Monongahela River from the West Virginia state line to Charleroi Lock and Dam has been extremely slow for the last month.
An occasional gar or channel catfish is being caught at Point Marion Lock and Dam by anglers using live minnows but the fishing has been tough. The channel catfish have been averaging between 20 and 24 inches in length and around the same length for the gar. An angler was seen catching a 24-inch walleye at night off the lock wall at Point Marion. He caught the fish on a live minnow. Another angler was observed catching a nice largemouth bass, in the 3- pound range, off the lock wall using a live minnow. However, for the most part though the bass, sauger and walleye have completely shut off. The river is down a couple of feet and the water temperature is probably pretty high.
A few channel catfish in the 24-inch range and a few carp in the 8-pound range were seen being caught at Maxwell Lock and Dam. The catfish were being caught on live minnows and the carp were being caught on homemade dough balls.
There has been plenty of pleasure boating activity on the Monongahela River. Last weekend was extremely busy and it seemed that anyone who had a boat was out on the water.
There have been a few anglers fishing the South Fork of Tenmile Creek around the Beagle Club but the water level in the creek is low also. They have managed to catch a few smallmouth bass using lures but nothing significant.
Anglers spoken to fishing Tenmile Creek around Clarksville and Millsboro have said that they aren’t really catching anything.
The water level in the Youghiogheny River from Connellsville to Layton is low also but anglers are still having decent success catching smallmouth bass. Anglers having the best luck are floating down the river in canoes or rafts and are using live minnows or nightcrawlers for bait. The bass have been averaging around 12 inches in length.
About the only thing currently willing to bite at Dunlap Lake has been the largemouth bass and the bluegill. Anglers are reporting good success catching the largemouth bass using soft plastic baits that imitate worms or minnows.
Anglers have been catching trout in the Fly Fishing Only/Delayed Harvest area of Dunbar Creek. As is the case most everywhere else, the water level is low and the most popular areas to fish have been where the stream habitat improvement devices are in the stream. Dry flies seemed to be working the best with the Adams or Black Ant patterns being favorite choices.
Southern Somerset County
A lot of nice crappy are being caught on jigs at High Point Lake. A few largemouth and smallmouth bass, pike and pickerel are also being caught.
Anglers have been catching smallmouth bass and channel catfish at Youghiogheny River Lake. Trout will be stocked in the Youghiogheny River Tailrace on September 3rd.
Washington County
The fishing at Cross Creek has been slow.
Southern Westmoreland County
Fishing at Twin Lakes has been slow but a few bluegills are being caught.
In the Allegheny River, anglers are picking up some smallmouth bass and an occasional musky. Gar are showing up in the back channel behind Twelve Mile Island on the Allegheny River. Other lakes in the Westmoreland County area have little angling pressure, which is no surprise for this time of year.
