I have fished the W-Creek from above Camptown to the Suskie. It's taken 4 trips each doing a length of the creek from a quick walk of .75 miles, to about a half morning of 1.5 miles, to 3 miles at a stretch (that's a long day.) This morning Rich Neiley and I did the last 3/4 mile of the creek to the confluence of the NB. I've learned a few things about this creek. The mud will suck off your wading boots. Sometimes shallow riffles hold BIG fish You don't need deep holes to catch fish. Some SM's will take up residence in 4" of water. Trout will roam far, far away from stocking points (in this case I've found rainbows 15 to 20 miles downstream from the nearest stocking point) and with today's journey down the creek... the big adult SM's have left the creek. All the fish we saw/caught today were juvenile. The normal pools that we fished in the last 3 weeks are devoid of adult sized fish. Have they migrated to the NB of the Suskie to bulk up for fall? We found our "usual holes" held no sizeable fish and what few remained where very small and skittish. Rich with a "small" smallie. A perfect hole that many smallie's and chubs have been caught in... today it was empty! Not even a nibble! We pounded the water and changed flies up and down this run. Nary a chub or a bass... My only sizeable catch of the morning. Very paltry indeed! Just when we think we know a creek hidden pockets and corners... it throws a curve ball at us. But that's fishing, right?
