My first whitetail buck with the bow. Kind of a fluke shot, somehow managed to hit under the right eye and out under the left ear had it mounted in a european type mount with the arrow still in the skull.

zodiacgps - he ran only 100 yds from where I shot him, but he left behind one hell of a blood trail. from the initial shot spot he left 3 drops of blood, at 25 yds from the spot he left a small pool. At 50 yds it was a large puddle , at 75 yds I heard him crashing in the brush 25 yds from me, found him piled up next to a tree.

interesting shot to say the least....i shot a doe one year in the head just in front of the ear and out the same spot on the other ear, dropped in her tracks....the shot was only 15 feet and she didn't know i was there....all i saw was her head through the brush as she was sneaking through past me....i was figureing i'd miss but took the shot anyway....don't even think of making that shot no more even with a rifle....i have a picture from my 35 mm i'll have to find and scan to my cpu to post....................bob

Congrats on your first bow kill!!!! I shot a 7-Pointer years ago in the head with the rifle! Funny thing is I did not mean to do it! 3 buck come running on the ridge below me and I was scoping out all three to see which was the biggest. I squeezed the trigger and hit him behind the ears. Almost missed him. The shot just I guess grazed his head just enough to expose the brain and he dropped instantly!! I don't even remember having the head in the scope when I shot! I had my uncle standing behind me telling me to shoot so I think when I heard him say it I shot!!

That makes for a nice mount... I had a friend drill one in about the same spot and ended up taking all day to find. I suppose I would take a head shot if nothing else was offered and the deer didn't know I was there, but I would prefer to stay away from them...

don't want to cause a fight but why brag about what amounts to a poor shot. never heard so many people brag about shooting deer in the head . if thats your thing its a bad choice for shot placement. this is the type of thing that turns people against hunting. shot many deer in 38 years of hunting never in the head.

As I have pointed out time and time again in response to such replies, the head shot was purely accidental.
I had aimed for just behind the right front shoulder on a 25 yd quartering slightly toward, but when I came to full draw I think he caught the movement but wasn't sure what it was. As I released the arrow I believe he ducked his head into the shot. The result being the pic above.
I myself don't advocate head shots on deer, but stranger things have happened while hunting. Thats why its called hunting.

the only problem i have is, you got the deer terrific and everybodys seem it. drop the discussion to something else . it's not a good subject to talk about how you killed something. bye the way weren't antler restrition in effect in your area at the time. good luck hunting this season

If you have the talent combined with experience ...its a "no-brainer!! ;D Ur right...if one spends enuff time huntin ...things happen. Ive had a coupla of marginal spine shots where im shootin down at an extreme angle that dropped deer in its tracks. Would i advocate such a shot..hell no...would i accept the result..hell yes! nuff said.

mrlongbeard - yes antler restrictions were in effect - as they are in the entire state. I hunt area 2E - which is a 3 point on a side area, this deer was taken on my uncle's farm in 2D - which is a 4 point on a side area.
this deer met either restriction as it was a 4x2, was almost a 4x3 but missed it by a 1/2 inch.
