On another site there was a thread started about pointing Labs, some of the ""so called"" non hunting members claimed that there was no such thing as a pointing Lab. Does anyone know how common Pointing Labs are?? Below is my post in the thread. Thanks, Pike """""""""My lab pup points all the time. He does it all the time in the yard and has done it dozens of times in the field over the last month while shed hunting in OH. when ever we came across a grouse or woodcock. I decided to wait until I got pics of him doing it since some of the so called experts here would claim that he doesnt. Well I just had him in the yard and a bird flew into a bush so I ran into the house and grabbed my camera, a couple minutes later when I returned he was still on point. Pike

yes there are pointing labs.you can train a lab to to do almost anything that dosent require thumbs.they even have pointing lab trials.pick a bird dog training book and get started. it might interfear with your shed hunting.after small game season my brittany will hunt sheds till the spring woodcock migration then its back to job 1, birds.

I'm not a lab guy (GSPs) for me but pointing labs have become poplular and there is at least one breeder in the Harrisburg area producing pointing labs. Now the hardcore lab folks may not like a pointing lab as the lab was traditionally a flusher and should not hesitate before flushing....maybe next we'll have flushing shorthairs - but it would act just like an untrained shorthair that has developed a bad habit.
We had a very nice yellow pointing lab in the Keystone Chapter of NAVHDA recently - very nice hunting dog and he had quite a bit of pointing instinct.

I adopted my pup from a rescue that got him from an Amish puppy mill in Lancaster Co., so I wonder how common pointing labs really are. Yesterday he was even pointing at a bumble bee. LOL! Pike
