Anglers caught some nice fish at two local tournaments recently.
The Westmoreland County Sportsmen's League and others sponsored a derby at Mammoth Park. There, Catch of the Day honors went to Bill Gaskin of Jeannette, who caught a 16 1/2-inch palomino trout.
That shouldn't have been a surprise. Gaskin, a regular at these events, has won three of the last four derbies sponsored by the league and the county Parks Department.
Floyd Newell of Latrobe took the largest trout in the adult category, a 13 1/2-inch rainbow. Second place went to Ken Hoenshell of Delmont for a 13-inch rainbow, and George Merz of Harrison City took third for a 12 5/8-inch rainbow.
Among youths, the biggest trout was caught by David Snyder of United, who landed a 14 5/8-inch rainbow. Chloe Eutsey of Kecksburg took second with a 13-inch rainbow, and Steven Thompson of Mt. Pleasant took third with a 12 1/2-inch rainbow.
In the longest nontrout category, first among adults was Mark Shaffer of Tarrs for a 14 3/8-inch catfish. A 13 5/8-inch catfish got John Frost of Dawson second-place honors, and an 11 1/2-inch catfish netted third for Tiffany Frost of Dawson.
Faith Swank of Mt. Pleasant caught an 11 1/2-inch catfish to take first in the youth division. Second went to Donny Hails of Mt. Pleasant for an 11 1/2-inch catfish, and third went to John Pravlik of Mt. Pleasant for an 11-inch catfish.
The biggest carp were a 31 1/2-inch fish caught by Trey Burkholder of Mt. Pleasant and a 30 1/8-incher caught by John Orischak of New Florence.
The Twin Lakes Fishing Association hosted a derby of its own. The top catch was a 16-inch rainbow landed by Taylor Golden.
In the adult category, George Mertz caught the longest trout, a 15 7/8-inch rainbow. Second went to Chris Cline for a 15-inch rainbow, and third went to Bill Gaskin for a 14-inch rainbow.
Caitlin Cope was the youth with the biggest trout, a 13-inch rainbow. Second went to Cory Watson for a 12-inch rainbow, and third was David Spalla for a 12-inch rainbow.
The biggest nontrout in the adult category was a 19-inch carp caught by Charlie Cifra. A 10 1/8-inch perch caught by Michelle Cline was good for second, and a 9-inch perch earned Mable Miscovich third.
Among the kids, Garrett Stevenson took first with a 10 3/8-inch crappie. Second went to Zachary Mattuci for a 10-inch crappie, and third was Siera Aniballi for a 9 7/8-inch perch
