About 2,500 fish have turned up dead in Pymatuning reservoir on the Ohio-Pennsylvania border since May 15.
Everything from croppie to walleye to bass have been washing ashore dead over the past 12 days.
"We're a very popular fishing lake," said Pete Houghton, Pymatuning State Park manager. "It's a good, good fishing lake. We have a number of fish kill every year. But not in these numbers. So something in my opinion has certainly happened here that's not right. And that's what we need to find out what it is."
Since officials don't know just yet what's causing the fish to die, they also don't know whether it would be harmful to humans. They're recommending anglers take caution.
Late Thursday the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued a do not eat consumption advisory for all fish taken from Pymatuning. There are multiple agencies involved in trying to determine what's causing these fish to die.
"Some of those tests takes days to run," Houghton said. "I know they're trying to speed that up. [Wednesday], we sent fish to Cornell--the university up in Cornell. A doctor there to do some additional testing to try to determine what has happened here."
So far, the carp that draw thousands of visitors to the Linesville Spillway on Pymatuning hasn't been affected like the other fish. With a busy holiday weekend on the way, park officials hope to have an answer before the crowds start showing up.
