Fish advisories lifted for pair of local waterways Thursday, June 17, 2010 By John Hayes, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
The state Department of Environmental Protection has lifted fish consumption advisories for Pymatuning Reservoir and Tamarack Lake.
The "Do Not Eat" warning on those Crawford County lakes had been in effect since June 4, when large numbers of fish of various species were found dead. Research on fish tissue samples, conducted by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and Cornell University, determined the fish died from outbreaks of the naturally occurring bacteria Columnaris, which occurred when water warmed quickly while fish were spawning.
Test results were confirmed by the state's Interagency Fish Consumption Advisory Technical Workgroup. In a related water-quality study, DEP researchers found no unusual contaminants in the lakes and downstream water supplies. No other bodies of water were impacted by the fish kills.
