Greene and Southern Washington Counties
The Monongahela River has provided really good fishing this year. Anglers are doing very well catching smallmouth bass. Two anglers from a local bass fishing club reported catching a combined 52 smallmouth bass between them in a day of fishing. They were fishing with soft plastic artificials and crank baits. The largest smallmouth bass they caught was approximately three pounds. Although the anglers did not want to divulge their hot spots, they did say that they did very well in close proximity of the Masontown Bridge. Other angles have also reported that the smallmouth bass bite has been very good.
Grays Landing Lock and Dam and Maxwell Lock and Dam are still producing good catches of fish. Anglers are catching channel catfish in the 17-inch range, as well as walleye, sauger, white bass and striped bass. As is usually the case, most of the catches have been made using live minnows or nightcrawlers.
Anglers are doing well catching channel catfish, sauger and walleye at Point Marion Lock and Dam when the Army Corps doesn't have more than a few gates open letting water over the dam. Whenever there are more than a few open, the water seems to become too turbid and the bite shuts down.
