I been puting minnow traps( mainly trying for creek chubs) out for about two weeks now and haven't caught a thing. For you local guys, I been putting them out in Ten Mile above jefferson behind the old prision. I have been using dog food for bait. What the heck am I doing wrong???
Forgot to add--I'm letting the traps soak for at least two days before I check them

I used to hang a little mesh baggy with bread in it on eaach end of the trap just inside the holes. I had a problem with them staying down low where the bait was at the bottom of the cage instead of coming in high through the holes.

For bait, i use a handful of dry cat or dog food, a slice of bread and half an onion.
In bigger streams, you need to know for sure there are minnows close to where you throw the trap in in the first place. Dont just assume it. In larger streams they can be spread out and hit and miss. Ive seined several shallower areas of 10 mile through the years, even some fairly recent, and used to walk it with dad bass fishin' alot when i was a kid.
As for chubs, i like the size that wont fit in a one inch legal trap, so i get mine seining & if i know some holes over my hip boots deep where i know there are lots of them, i get em on a ultralight rod, size 12 hook and 2 maggots. It you can get a good spot, at times you can catch a good bit of them pretty quick.
