Went down to the Rices Landing Lockwall and did a few hours fishing. Since I'm having a hard time catching creek chubs I went the easy way and bought some shinners- Had a few hits and managed one small channel

Havent been out cattin' for a couple of weeks. I was mainly fishing for big flats and larger channels that would hit big baits last couple of months. Nothing big yet. Lots of small flats Some decent channels, biggest flat only 30" so far this year. Put in some long nights. Mon's been tough on me this year so far. Took a break for awhile and switched it up last 3 trips trying for musky. Had one small fish follow. Another hit while trolling and let some teeth marks in the lure, .. But no dice.
Dad & a couple of buddies that go with me occaissionally had been catchin' quite a few smaller channels on chicken liver & smaller chubs & bluegills. They like catchin' fish, and dont worry about targeting the big boys.
Fish down there often YI?

I see you have there an ugly stik, whats that other rod? Berkley glow stick?
Reel on the ugly looks like an abu? Whats the other?

I haven't fished down there for a few years just started going down last year and this year--mostly in the evenings---I used to live just up the street back in the mid 70s
Reel on the ugly stik is a abu 5500c---bigger rod is a 8ft berkley glow stik/w a abu 6501c--I took off the double paddle handle and put on a "Power handle"
BTW-- seen, what i thought was a musky chasing a small bass on the surface the other night and been having some of my bigger shinners totally mangled fishing suspended about 10ft from a slip bobber rig.

Sounds like using big chubs & suckers with a"quick strike" rig might be worth a try. I use them with 6 to 10" suckers & chubs when bobber fishin' and i know musky are around.
Though i dont use them when targeting cats mainly, Any cat coming along wont hesitate to take a whack at a bait with a quick strike rig on it either. Works slick. No waiting, when that bobber goes under, set the hook and whatever is on the other end is comin' in.
Last time out at night, caught a decent channel that was around 24 inches, and it hit a 10 inch bait! Couldnt take a bait that size in its mouth all the way unless it waited for the very lively bait to die and took it head first, but it grabbed it across the middle and held on, trying to kill it first i guess and swam with it. WIth a quickstrike rig, you dont miss many fish.
I make my own from two short steel leaders, one very short around 6 inches that the hooks go on both ends, and another a little longer to act as your actual leader connecting to the rig. around 30 lb or so if i remember correctly, also 2 good size trebles and a split ring.
For musky, they are darn near a MUST. Good for the fish too, you dont have to wait for them to take the bait good, so they dont take a big hook to the gut and die later.

I'm going to have to make up a few and give it a try. I used to get some nice chubs and suckers out of Whitley behind Mapletown like I said, the creek seems messed up. Not sure if it's just from a lack of a good steady rain to flush it out or something from the well fracing going on?

Yeah, that stretch of whitely even just a few years ago was loaded with northern hog suckers. Thats the ones that have the mottled pattern on their back. Kinda like a sauger.
I know what you mean about that brown color too. Think it might be that golden algae? They said its in whitely. The same stuff that killed all the fish in dunkard. Though i guess it was an extreme case, and a significant "bloom". Anyway, yeah, its an ugly color.
