I remember growing up, it seemed everyone except me went to a hunting camp in either potter or tioga county, that was always a dream but never had the chance. I know as generations pass, and huntinig interest drops if camps are still a big part of deer hunting. I know a lot of the economy in the northern county's depended on the deer hunters coming into the area.

I chose to live around here so my house could be my camp but I know alot of people that still go away to camp.

my dad was partners in a hunting camp in elk county when i was growing up but when he quit drinking he stopped going up there. a small price to pay but i still miss the place. i go to a camp in venango county but its more for fishing that hunting. its right on the allegheny river and the fishing is great there.

I took over a camp from a friend and it's definitely used now all year long.Even for a day. I grew up under the same conditions as you Callmaker, everybody went up north to go deer hunting and trout fishing. Well, I got my own place now and everybody ain't up there now and that's great for me. I like the solitude. Bad for the local economies, I feel for them and I try do my best to buy up there.Tourists in a small way (compared to the hunters and fishermen lost) like bikers and elk viewers, are making up for some of the hunters and fishermen, for the restaurants at least.IMO

The economy is that area is bad but it's not because of a lack of hunters or fisherman. The few big employers went belly up and the timber industry is slow.It really can't be blamed on a two week period when the population used to go up ten fold.I live about 25 minutes from Bennezette. My wife and I took the kids up there this past sunday to see the new Elk center. We went late sunday afternoon and it was a mad house. There were cars, horse trailers and people everywhere.Unfortunately, nobody except one guy has capitalized on it.That area get's a huge influx of people from spring until late fall and the economy is still in the crapper. One single guy has benefitted from it all.The rest of the people are forced to just put up with it.

Eddie,I like hunting around Sinnemahoning and thought about buying a camp somewhere between there and Bennezette. At this point in my life, there's just no way it would get used on a regular basis.I take one day a year off to hunt and couldn't justify the expense and extra work it would take. One of my best friends has a camp right on rt 872.He doesn't have kids, get's weekends off and has about 4 weeks vacation. He gets a tone of use out of it.He fishes almost every weekend when it's warm and they just started using it for deer hunting the last 3 or 4 years. They may not use it every weekend but it's a rare weekend when one of them aren't using it.It would be cool to have a camp or belong to one but it's just not in the cards for me.My the time I'd be old enough to have the time,I wouldn't be able to climb those God forsaken hills.

Good point about the Industries in the area Doug. You gotta admit hunters and fishermen helped to put a couple of bucks in the right places and I'll bet some folks, clubs in town, bars, etc. relied on that extra income. You don't have to belong to a Camp in the area or buy one, I invited you before and you're still welcome, bring your son too. Don't expect a Taj Mahal. No running water, outdoor privy, bacon, sausage, greasy food, high calories and fat! The "hills" are a bear for me already,I wonder why? LOL.

Hunters cetainly helped but you can't expect to carry the economy for a whole year on two weeks. One of these days I'll have to check out your place.I know a couple good places to hunt up there that I'll show you. It's a brutal place to hunt but there's something special about it.You really have to work for deer up there. It's hard to explain but when you get one,you feel like you've earned it.

No,you can't carry an economy on 2 weeks of deer season, I didn't try to say that. My point was that trout season and deer season could generate enough cash flow to keep a club, bar, restaurant, etc.from going under with the extra income that wouldn't be there if they had to rely on the locals which is evident now.Would you like a spurt of 30% of your yearly income in 2 weekends coming in? or 10% or 5% in 2 weekends of trout and deer? I would. Did you ever see the tax records from the Cameron Co. Echo? It's amazing how many taxes are owed by some of the businesses. Why? Hmmmm, I don't think it's a secret. When you come to my Camp we'll watch that tape I keep referring to about the Town Hall meeting in Coudersport. I think it's very informative. I'll be in touch.ps, hunting is an option at my place. I'm there at least once a month every month.Good times and good friends are the rule. C'mon up and kick back.
