Never hunted coons specifically. Guys down in West Virgina hunt them at night with hounds. That's a sight to behold. I reckon it'd be fun, but never met anyone who actually does it.

me and mrlongbeard went out about 15 years ago with the nephew of property owners we used to hunt on. this guy had two coon hounds, so we headed out, it wasn't long before those dogs picked up the scent of a racoon, then off we went at a pretty quick pace, we had on headlights and took turns at shooting racoons out of trees all night long, it was a lot of fun, way different than hunting during the day.

I hunt coons every year, I tend to concentrate my hunting from mid Dec to the end of the season. Their pelts tend to be in better shape during this time period.
When I was growing up dad and I used to hunt them with hounds, but after a couple incidents with people trying to steal our dogs we quit using dogs but continued to hunt them every year.
I usually hunt them by walking field edges at night shining the trees with my spotlight, then getting as close to the tree as I can and take em with my 17 HMR handgun. I used to use a 22 LR, but a head shot with it causes them to flop around when they hit the ground - ruins the pelt that way. Hit em with the 17 and they drop stone dead.
I only got 3 coons this past fur season, weather around here kept them holed up pretty good. In 2005 I got 10 during the same period.
Asinglearrow - send me some info on where your club is located, and I would be glad to come down and get a few coons out of there

At one time after I came back from Nam I ate, slept, and lived coon hunting. Had an old Airdale hound silent and hide where high back then. My Dad thought I head my head screwed up from drugs in Nam. (You had to know my Dad) Hunted coon with braces on both legs and got stuck in snow drifts, rolled down banks, fell in creeks but me and that old hound had some of the "best thearpy" money could buy.. Sure wish I could do it today. MM
