I have done a few inlays into the stocks. And put brass "dots" in stocks to add an ID to give a stock gun a difference that makes it easy to distinguish from others. Basically drill a hole in the stock a 1/4 inch deep, maybe at the heel of the butt stock, add a bit of linseed oil and drive a very slightly oversized brass peg in. Finish it flush with the stock. An eighth inch round brass dot doesn't detract from the gun and can be picked out easily by the person owning the gun. Remember, barrels can easily be changed, and that is where the serial numbers are on muzzleloaders. I had a Lyman GPR and put three dots on the heel. At a match a guy picked up my gun instead of his. I explained that he had the wrong gun. He said no way. I advised him that mine had three dots on the heel and my name engraved on the bottom flat of the barrel. He took one look at the heel and saw the three dots.
