hear stories about hunting, the hunter seen a deer way out but was legal like 150yards out, a doe in season, the hunter said i didnt shoot cause it was too far away. i thought to myself.my encore is capable of 200yd plus shots how bout your inline?
if it was a broadside shot and everthing looked clear why not??i think just some people are unaware of their rifle-like accuracy...

With the Encore I'd shoot but with the Hawken Cap & Ball I don't think I would. Reason is Open sights and not enough practice.

My inline is an el cheapo 45 cal using 3 triple 7 pellets and a 195 gr powerbelt aerotip bullet it carries similar ballistics to a 30/30. At the range on a calm day I can put 3 rounds in the bull and cover them with a silver dollar. So would I take a wide open 200 yd shot? You betcha I would

Some of the hot smokeless in-lines can reach out effectively 3-4 hundred yards.
I have shot at 200 with reasonable accuracy but most hunting shots well inside 100 yard line.

There is positively no reason why with a long bullet and around 80 grains of powder a 45, 50 or even a 54 caliber muzzleloader couldn't reliably kill a deer at 200 to 400 yds. Those distances would be out beyond most round ball shots. I have knocked down pistol sillywet pigs at 200 meters with a 54 hawkin and PRB's. (My 45 caliber rifle would just hit them and go ping with PRB's)
And quite frankly, it doesn't matter whether a gun was a side lock, box lock or bolt style in line, as long as it had rifling and a bullet geared toward long range shooting, it will clobber game at long distances with old fashioned black powder too. A great many skirmishers with 3 groove Springfield muskets and minnie balls could hit a deer and kill it at 200 yds. No hot loads or fancy modern in-line guns needed. In-lines do have some advantages over the old guns, but not in effective range for bullets.
A 500 grain slug over 65 grains of 2fg in my stock, unaltered, as issued, military trapdoor does some serious shoulder bruising. And it knocks down 500 meter rams. I'd really like to see some body fire their 150 grain fancy zinger loads from an in-line and hit those rams. Between the short barrels and the bullets most guys shoot, I don't think they would have the range or accuracy of my 124 yr old rifle.

;D I've never tried much beyond that range, just not much point in it - we don't have that many buffalo in these parts nowadays.

And your target demonstates the point exactly. A 476 grain 45 cal bullet has got to be almost two inches long. A little 250 grain whoopydoo bullet and 150 grains would not do as well.

My t/c thunderhawk in 50 cal. will reach out to 200 yards with out any problems.I tried it last year from the bench my load is 85 grains of triple 777 and a 375 buffalo SSB boat tail sabot bullet. I am 3" high at 100 yards and 15" low at the 200 yard target 5 shots at 200 yards that gave me a softball group
